Chapter 2: The Shadow in the Mirror

The master suite was plunged in semi-darkness, the heavy velvet drapes drawn tight against the morning sun. The air smelled of stale lilac water, rubbing alcohol, and cold dust.

""Helena?"" Julian called out, his voice shaking.

Near the foot of the four-poster mahogany bed, slumped against an upholstered armchair, was Helena. She wore a thin white silk dressing gown, her long chestnut hair tangled across her shoulders. Her face was pale, beads of cold sweat clinging to her forehead. On the small bedside table rested an open vial of prescription sedatives and a half-empty glass of water.

Julian dropped to his knees on the Persian rug, his hands instantly checking her neck for a pulse. Her skin was freezing, her pulse thready and slow, but her breath hitched faintly in her chest.

""Helena! Look at me, please!"" Julian pleaded, lifting her shoulders into his arms.

Helena’s eyelids fluttered, dark hazel eyes clouded by heavy medication. She looked up, her dry lips parting. ""Julian... she told me... you were never coming back from Chicago... She gave me the pills... so I would sleep through the custody hearing...""

Standing in the doorway, Eleanor gripped the splintered doorframe, her knuckles white.

Julian turned his head slowly. The grief on his face had transformed into an icy, devastating rage. ""You told me she was in rehab in Boston. You told me she signed away parental rights because she couldn't handle Noah.""

""She was ruining this family, Julian!"" Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic facade completely collapsing into ugly, bitter self-preservation. ""She is a schoolteacher’s daughter from upstate! She brought disgrace to the Vance foundation with her scandals and debts! I had to protect our lineage! I had to protect you!""

""You poisoned my wife in our own home,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it made the hair on Clara’s arms stand up.

Clara entered the room carrying Noah, who buried his face in her shoulder to avoid seeing the medicine bottles. Clara placed Noah gently on a chaise lounge near the door and stepped toward the nightstand, picking up the medication vial with a clean handkerchief.

""This is concentrated chloral hydrate, Mr. Vance,"" Clara stated calmly. ""It’s a restricted sedative. Call the paramedics immediately. If she’s had this dosage for more than twelve hours, she needs an immediate gastric lavage.""

Julian pulled his phone from his suit pocket and dialed emergency services, his eyes never leaving his mother’s face.
