Chapter 3: Sirens in the Courtyard

Within eight minutes, the quiet morning air of the suburban estate was torn apart by the wailing sirens of two municipal ambulances and a marked police interceptor.

Paramedics in dark blue uniforms rushed up the grand staircase with an emergency stretcher, oxygen tanks, and medical kits. The luxury mansion, once a monument to high-society discretion, was flooded with emergency lights reflecting red and blue across the crystal chandeliers.

Eleanor Vance retreated to the library on the ground floor, pacing behind her mahogany desk while her private attorney argued over the speakerphone.

""You cannot arrest my client on the basis of a toddler's statement!"" attorney Sterling shouted through the line. ""There is no physical evidence of intent!""

Detective Frank Miller walked into the library without knocking, his trench coat damp from the sudden morning drizzle. He pulled a clear evidence bag from his pocket containing the prescription bottle Clara had preserved, along with Eleanor’s private medical diary retrieved from the dressing table.

""Save your breath, Counselor,"" Detective Miller said, resting his hand on his duty belt. ""The pharmacy record in downtown Manhattan shows Mrs. Eleanor Vance filled this thirty-milligram sedative using a deceased doctor’s DEA license three days ago. We also have security footage from the hallway camera covering the east wing.""

Eleanor froze, her hand hovering over the telephone console. ""The cameras are private property.""

""A felony investigation overrules private property, ma'am,"" Detective Miller said. He stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his leather case. ""Mrs. Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, unlawful imprisonment, and obtaining controlled substances by fraud.""

As the cold steel locked around Eleanor’s wrists, she looked at Julian, who stood in the doorway holding Noah’s small hand.

""Julian... you are my son,"" Eleanor wept, her arrogance finally shattering into pathetic despair. ""You cannot let them take me out the front door like a common criminal!""

May you like

Julian looked at his mother, his dark eyes hollow and steady. ""You locked my wife in a dark room to steal my son, Mother. You walk out that door as whatever the law says you are.""
