Chapter 5: The Dismantling of the Manor

Two weeks after the arrest, Julian Vance took an indefinite leave of absence from the board of directors of Vance Maritime Logistics.
He returned to the grand estate not to manage it, but to dismantle the empire of pretense Eleanor had spent fifty years constructing.
Moving vans lined the circular driveway. Julian hired an independent auction firm to appraise the heavy antique furnishings, the crystal chandeliers, and the private art collection, with all proceeds earmarked for the *St. Jude Pediatric Trauma Fund*.
Julian walked through the echoing halls with Clara, reviewing the inventory lists.
""Are you selling the estate entirely, Mr. Vance?"" Clara asked, holding a clipboard.
""Call me Julian, please,"" he said, looking at the grand spiral staircase where Eleanor used to stand to deliver her judgments. ""And yes. This house was never a home, Clara. It was a museum built to showcase my mother’s vanity and keep the world at arm's length. Noah and Helena deserve to grow up somewhere where the sun actually reaches the floors.""
""Where will you go?""
""Upstate,"" Julian smiled faintly, the first genuine smile Clara had seen on his face. ""Helena’s grandfather left her a small apple orchard and farmhouse in the Hudson Valley. We’re moving there at the end of the month.""
Julian paused, turning to face Clara. ""I wanted to offer you a position, Clara. As the director of our newly restructured family foundation upstate, helping us build community health centers for rural families. If you’re willing to leave the city.""

Clara looked out the window at the morning mist rising off the lawns. ""I’ve spent ten years cleaning other people’s mansions, Julian. I think it’s about time I helped build something of my own.""
