Chapter 5 - Whispers in the ER

The sterile white lights of the county hospital emergency room buzzed overhead, casting a harsh glare on the stainless-steel trauma bay. Chloe lay on the examination table, hooked up to a tangle of intravenous lines and heart monitors that beeped in a steady, reassuring rhythm.
Jax stood motionless in the corner of the room, his bare torso covered in dried blood from his shattered knuckles and the glass-laced window frame. A nurse had bandaged his hands, but he refused to sit down, his dark eyes locked on his daughter’s pale face.
The heavy glass door slid open, and a middle-aged doctor with silver temples walked in, consulting a metal clipboard.
"Her core temperature has stabilized," the doctor said, offering a reassuring, tired smile. "She suffered mild heat exhaustion and dehydration, but you got her out just in time, Mr. Miller. Another five minutes inside that vehicle would have caused irreversible organ damage."
Jax let out a long, shuddering breath that sounded like a sob trying to tear its way out of his iron chest. He nodded slowly, muttering a hoarse word of thanks.
Before the doctor could speak again, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway outside. The door swung open violently, revealing Clara flanked by two men in expensive dark grey suits. Behind them stood a stern-looking woman clutching a thick leather portfolio bearing the seal of the state's Department of Child Safety.
"There he is," Clara announced loudly, pointing a finger at Jax. "That is the unstable ex-convict who endangered my daughter's life. I want him removed from this hospital immediately, and I want emergency custody granted to me right now."
The woman with the portfolio stepped forward, her expression carved from stone. "Mr. Miller, I am Director Helen Vance. In light of your criminal record, the violent altercation outside the courthouse, and the immediate threat to the child's safety, I am issuing an emergency protective custody order."
Jax stepped away from the bed, his massive frame blocking access to Chloe’s resting form. "She locked our daughter in a baking car to extort me, Director. There are security cameras, there is a witness—a little girl named Lily—and she has the key fob in her pocket right now!"
Director Vance didn't blink. She reached into her portfolio and pulled out a stack of crisp legal documents. "Mrs. Miller has already provided surveillance footage from the courthouse parking system. It shows you aggressively attacking her and repeatedly striking her vehicle in an unprovoked rage. The police report confirms your parole violation."
Jax stared at the woman in absolute disbelief. "She edited the footage! She has the money to buy half this city, and you know it!"
"Mr. Miller, raise your voice again, and I will have security remove you in handcuffs," Director Vance warned coldly. "Mrs. Miller retains full legal custody pending a family court evaluation. You are legally barred from coming within five hundred feet of this child."
Clara stepped past the director, flashing Jax a predatory, triumphant smile as she reached down to stroke Chloe’s sleeping cheek.

"Goodbye, Jax," Clara whispered softly, leaning in close. "And thanks for leaving those offshore accounts unprotected. By midnight, your entire empire will legally belong to me. Just like it did before you went away."
