Chapter 10 - The Apex Tower

The Apex Financial Tower stood like a jagged obsidian monolith in the heart of the city’s financial district. Its tinted glass exterior reflected the neon glow of surrounding skyscrapers, casting a cold, artificial aura over the empty street below.

Jax slipped through the shadows of the service alley, his bruised hands gripping the cold wire fence before he vaulted over it with effortless, silent grace. The master maintenance override card Marcus had given him felt heavy in his pocket, a tiny talisman of hope against an impossible fortress.

He reached the heavy steel freight door at the rear of the building. The keypad glowed with a dim blue light, demanding biometric verification and a six-digit security pin.

Jax didn't hesitate. He pulled the laminated keycard from his pocket and swiped it firmly through the magnetic reader.

BEEP.

The red light flickered green, and the heavy pneumatic lock disengaged with a deep, satisfying thud. Jax pulled the door open just enough to slip inside, disappearing into the dark, echoing bowels of the skyscraper.

The service corridor smelled of industrial cleaning solution, ozone, and old concrete. Overhead, fluorescent bulbs flickered with a low, rhythmic hum. Jax moved with the practiced, silent stride of a man who had spent years learning how to navigate hostile territory where a single wrong sound meant violence.

He found the freight elevator shaft within seconds. The digital display above the door showed the car was currently stationary on the penthouse level—floor seventy-eight.

Jax pressed the manual call button. Nothing happened. The system had been locked down from the executive security console upstairs.

"Smart," Jax muttered under his breath.

He didn't panic. He looked up at the reinforced metal maintenance ladder bolted directly into the concrete wall beside the elevator shaft. Without a second thought, he grabbed the rungs and began to climb, pulling his massive, muscular frame upward with relentless, burning determination.

Climbing seventy-eight floors of vertical steel ladder would have destroyed an ordinary man, but Jax’s adrenaline-fueled focus pushed his body past the pain of his battered hands and bruised ribs. Sweat poured down his face, stinging his eyes, but he didn't stop. Each rung was a heartbeat closer to his daughter.

By the time he reached the seventy-eighth floor access hatch, his chest was heaving, and his arms felt like lead weights, but his resolve was unbreakable.

He unlatched the heavy ceiling hatch of the elevator shaft and pushed it open, dropping silently onto the plush, soundproof carpeting of the penthouse corridor.

The air up here was crisp, smelling of expensive floral room freshener and chilled champagne. Through the glass walls of the hallway, he could see the sprawling, panoramic view of the glittering city lights stretching out into the dark horizon.

And directly ahead of him, standing guard outside double mahogany doors bearing a gold-embossed plaque, were two of Clara’s private enforcers, armed and alert.
