Chapter 3 - Sirens in the Asphalt

The wail of police sirens cut through the heavy afternoon air, bouncing off the towering concrete facade of the municipal courthouse. Red and blue lights flashed frantically against the gleaming black paint of the luxury SUV, casting eerie, dancing shadows over the scene.
Jax didn't care about the approaching police. His entire world narrowed down to the faint, irregular thuds coming from inside the vehicle. Chloe was no longer crying. The silence inside that cabin was heavier, deadlier than any scream.
"Jax! Step away from the vehicle with your hands behind your head!" a sharp voice bellowed through a megaphone from the lead squad car.
Two uniformed officers leaped out of their cruisers, hands resting instantly on the holstered firearms at their hips. Their eyes darted from Jax’s bleeding, scarred knuckles to Clara, who immediately transformed her demeanor. The cold, calculating corporate executive vanished in a heartbeat, replaced by a trembling, terrified mother.
"Officer, thank God you're here!" Clara cried out, her voice cracking with manufactured hysteria as she rushed toward the officers. "My ex-con husband just attacked me! He's having a psychotic episode, and he's locked our daughter inside the car to keep her hostage!"
Jax spun around, incredulous rage distorting his features. "You lying psychopath! You have the keys in your pocket! You locked her in there to blackmail me!"
"Shut up, Jax!" the senior officer barked, drawing his weapon and pointing it squarely at Jax’s chest. "Knees on the ground, hands behind your head right now! Do it!"
"Look inside the window, you idiot!" Jax shouted, taking a half-step forward despite the firearm aimed at his heart. "A three-year-old child is dying in that oven! Arrest her! She has the key fob!"
"He's violent, Officer! He spent ten years in federal prison for racketeering and extortion!" Clara wailed, pressing herself against the side of the police cruiser while subtly sliding the gold-plated key fob deeper into her blazer pocket. "He's unstable!"
Lily stepped out from the shadow of the SUV, her small pink dress fluttering in the wind kicked up by the patrol cars. She raised her toy stethoscope, pointing it directly at the officer's badge.
"She's lying," Lily declared, her childish voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable certainty. "The bad lady pushed the button on the little black clicker. I saw her do it right after we came out of the big doors."
The officers hesitated for a fraction of a second, glancing down at the little girl. Clara’s eyes flashed with sudden, venomous hatred toward the child.
"Ignore that brat, she's a stray nobody!" Clara snapped, losing her composure for a split second before catching herself.

The senior officer looked between Clara’s designer clothes, Jax’s bleeding hands, and the dark windows of the SUV. He lowered his weapon slightly, walking cautiously toward the rear door. He pressed his ear against the glass, listening intently. Inside, there was only the faint, terrifying sound of shallow, rattling breaths.
