Chapter 14 - The First Sunrise

The first rays of golden morning sunlight washed over the skyline, casting long, warm shadows across the polished white marble of the penthouse floor.
Jax stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, holding a sleeping Chloe in his arms. Her breathing was deep and even, her face peaceful against his shoulder. The terrifying nightmare of the hot SUV and the cold hospital sterile lights felt like a lifetime away, though the physical reminders—the bandages on his hands, the faint scent of smoke and dust—remained etched into his skin.
Lily sat cross-legged on the white leather sofa nearby, examining a colorful brochure of the city park she found on the table, humming a quiet, cheerful tune to herself.
Marcus stood near the mahogany doors, adjusting his trench coat. "Well, Miller, my shift ended an hour ago. I think my part in this story is officially finished."
Jax turned his head, looking over at the detective with a profound depth of gratitude in his dark eyes. "You gave me my life back, Marcus. If there's ever anything—"
"Just raise your daughter right, Miller," Marcus interrupted, offering a rare, genuine smile. "That’s the only payment I want."
With a brief nod, the detective turned and walked out of the penthouse, the heavy doors closing softly behind him for the final time.
Jax walked over to the sofa where Lily was playing. He gently shifted Chloe into one arm and reached down with his other hand to help Lily fold her pink dress straight.
"Hey, Lily," Jax said softly. "What do you say we go somewhere with grass and trees today? Far away from tall glass buildings and fast cars?"
Lily’s eyes lit up with pure excitement. "Can we get ice cream too? Big scoops with chocolate sprinkles?"
"As many as you want," Jax promised, a genuine, warm smile finally breaking across his rugged, bearded face.
He walked toward the private elevator, carrying his sleeping daughter in one arm and holding Lily’s small, warm hand with the other. The elevator doors slid open automatically, welcoming them into a bright, descending car that smelled of fresh air and new beginnings.
They rode down in silence, passing through the seventy-eight floors of corporate glass and steel that had once represented a prison of secrets, corruption, and corporate greed. As the digital floor counter ticked down—70, 50, 30, 10, lobby—Jax felt the heavy iron chains of his past fall away completely.
The doors chimed and slid open to the ground floor lobby of the Apex Financial Tower. The morning air of the city drifted inside, cool, crisp, and alive with the sounds of a new day beginning.
Jax stepped out onto the pristine sidewalk, breathing in the deep, untainted oxygen of freedom. The manicured asphalt outside the grand entrance looked ordinary, peaceful, completely cleansed of yesterday's terror.
He gently set Chloe down on her feet. The little girl rubbed her eyes, yawned, and looked up at her father with a bright, sleepy smile that made Jax’s world instantly complete.

"Come on, Daddy," Chloe whispered, grabbing his index finger with her tiny hand. "Let's go home."
