Chapter 8: The Hard Choice

Evelyn froze, staring at the golden band resting on the glass table. ""You've lost your mind,"" she whispered. ""You're letting an old man's senile temper tantrum ruin everything we’ve built!""
""We built nothing!"" Logan shouted, his voice ringing through the cavernous foyer, finally shattering years of suppressed resentment. ""My father built a company with his sweat! I took his legacy and turned it into a trophy to buy your approval! We live in a seven-bedroom house for two people, while the men who weld our chassis can barely afford health insurance for their kids!""
""That is business, Logan!"" Evelyn screamed back. ""Everyone does it! You cut overhead to maximize profit!""
""Not at the cost of human souls,"" Logan said, his voice dropping back to a steady, resolute pitch. ""Dad gave me a choice tonight. A single choice. I can either stay here, fight him legally for control of the remaining liquid shares, and watch the factory collapse into bankruptcy... or I can step down as CEO, relinquish my executive salary, and go back to work where I belong.""
""Go back where?"" Evelyn asked, horror dawning in her eyes.
""To the plant,"" Logan said simply. ""As operations manager on the floor. Where I can earn back my self-respect and save the company from the bottom up.""
""I won't live in a middle-class suburb, Logan,"" Evelyn stated coldly, her eyes turning to stone. ""I didn't marry a factory supervisor.""
Logan looked at her for a long moment, feeling a strange sense of relief wash over him, as if a heavy chain had finally snapped.

""I know,"" Logan said gently. ""You married an image. And that image doesn't exist anymore.""
Without another word, Logan turned toward the stairs, packed a single duffel bag with basic clothes, and left the keys to the luxury sedan on the console table. As he walked out into the rain once more, he didn't feel defeat—he felt the first faint spark of freedom.
