Chapter 4: The Unraveling

By Monday morning, the true impact of Arthur’s departure rippled through the headquarters of Vance Enterprises. The grand boardroom on the twelfth floor was silent as the board members sat around the mahogany table. At the head of the table sat Logan, his eyes red from lack of sleep, his necktie slightly crooked.
Across from him sat Samuel Vance, Arthur’s younger brother and the company’s legal counsel, a sharp-eyed man in his sixties who had stood by Arthur through every major business decision for four decades.
""Where is the reserve fund, Logan?"" Samuel asked, his voice calm but icy. "" payroll for the assembly plant is due on Friday. The vendor supplier payments for the new line are forty-eight hours overdue. We were supposed to cover them from the liquid reserve account.""
Logan cleared his throat, his hands trembling slightly under the table. ""There has been... a temporary liquidity restructuring. The primary reserve account was closed.""
""Closed?"" one of the senior directors gasped. ""That account held eight hundred thousand dollars! That was our buffer against operational deficits!""
""That money belonged to my father,"" Logan confessed, looking down at his desk. ""He revoked the trust on Friday.""
A chorus of hushed exclamations broke out across the room. Samuel leaned back in his chair, watching his nephew with a look of profound disappointment rather than anger.
""Arthur didn't revoke that trust out of spite, Logan,"" Samuel said quietly, loud enough for the entire board to hear. ""He created that fund to ensure that no matter what economic downturn occurred, our factory workers would never miss a paycheck. He put your name on it because he trusted you to guard their livelihoods. What did you use that account for over the last two years?""

Logan stayed silent, but the board members already knew the answer. Country club memberships, luxury vehicle leases, and high-end home renovations designed to satisfy Evelyn’s endless appetite for social prestige.
""If that money isn't restored by Friday,"" Samuel continued, standing up and closing his leather folder, ""the factory line stops. And if the factory line stops, the main client contract is voided. You haven't just lost your father's trust, Logan. You've placed fifteen hundred families on the verge of ruin.""
