Chapter 7: Evelyn’s Reckoning

While Logan remained at the workshop, the atmosphere at the suburban mansion had deteriorated into chaos. Evelyn sat in the grand living room surrounded by open designer boxes, invoices, and bank statements spread across the glass coffee table.
Her phone rang continuously—calls from country club committees, private event planners, and boutique jewelers demanding confirmation on pending transactions. Without the primary trust account attached as secondary collateral, her black credit cards had been suspended one by one.
Her mother, Eleanor, a sharp-featured woman who had always pushed Evelyn toward high-society status, sat across from her sipping chilled white wine.
""Can't Logan just force his father to transfer the deed to the main house?"" Eleanor asked, tapping her manicured nails against the crystal glass. ""It’s absurd that an old man can cause this much inconvenience over a personal grievance.""
""He didn't just cause inconvenience, Mother,"" Evelyn snapped, her composure completely shattered. ""He cut off the entire liquidity line! The bank called ten minutes ago. The lease on the Porsche is due, the estate maintenance fee is past due, and Logan’s board is talking about emergency restructuring!""
""Then threaten him with public relations,"" Eleanor suggested cold-bloodedly. ""A story about a wealthy founder abandoning his own family always works.""
Before Evelyn could reply, the front door opened. Logan stepped inside. His suit was still damp, his shoes stained with dirt, but his expression was remarkably different. The anxious, submissive look he had carried for years was gone, replaced by a quiet, hollow stillness.
""Where have you been?"" Evelyn demanded, jumping up. ""Did you get the funds transferred back? Did you make him sign?""
Logan looked at his wife, then at his mother-in-law. For the first time, he saw the home he had built not as a sanctuary, but as an expensive showroom devoid of warmth.
""The money isn't coming back here, Evelyn,"" Logan said evenly, unbuttoning his damp suit jacket. ""And neither is my father.""

""What do you mean it's not coming back?!"" she yelled. ""How are we supposed to pay for the charity gala next weekend? What about my sister's investment pool?""
""There is no gala,"" Logan replied calmly, taking off his wedding ring and placing it on the table amidst the stack of overdue bills. ""And starting tomorrow, we are putting this house on the market.""
