Chapter 8 - The Briefcase in the Mist

The man in the dark suit walked with a measured, deliberate stride across the gravel driveway, his polished leather shoes crunching softly in the quiet night. He ignored the flashing lights of the abandoned police cruiser completely, focusing his attention entirely on the heavy oak front door of the house. He reached the threshold without knocking, raising a gloved hand and pressing it flat against the wood, pushing it open another foot to reveal the tense group standing in the foyer.
"Julian," the man called out, his voice carrying clearly into the house. "The board authorized containment, not a social visit."
Julian turned toward the open door, his expression unreadable. He stepped past Arthur and Connor, positioning himself right at the threshold, effectively shielding them from the newcomer's immediate line of sight.
"Containment implies there is something left to hide, Victor," Julian replied coolly, crossing his arms over his dark overcoat. "Mrs. Vance has already been neutralized by her own greed. The house is effectively abandoned."
Victor stepped one foot over the threshold, his sharp eyes scanning the opulent interior before locking onto Connor and the baby carrier. A cold, predatory smile touched his lips.
"Is it?" Victor asked softly. "Because I see unauthorized personnel holding proprietary assets. Assets that belong under the direct custody of the trust."
Arthur stepped forward, attempting to regain a shred of his lost authority.
"Get off my property," Arthur demanded, pointing a shaky finger at the intruder. "I am Arthur Vance. This house belongs to my family."
Victor laughed, a short, humorless sound that echoed off the high ceiling of the foyer.
"Your family name was bought and paid for in 1994, Arthur," Victor said, his eyes mocking the middle-aged man. "Your mother didn't build an empire; she managed a lease. And that lease expired the moment Connor stepped through this front door with the Tolin HDDEET folder."
Clara gripped Connor’s arm, her fingernails digging through the fabric of his jacket.
"Connor, what are they talking about?" Clara whispered frantically. "What do they want with the baby?"
Connor didn't answer immediately. He looked down at the infant, whose eyes had fluttered open for a brief second in response to the cold draft before drifting back to sleep. Connor felt a sickening realization settle in his stomach. The legal folder wasn't just about property or corporate fraud; it was a lineage claim, and the child in his arms was the ultimate leverage.
"They don't want the house, Clara," Connor said quietly, his voice taut with suppressed rage. "They want the bloodline."
Julian turned his head slightly, glancing back at Connor with a look of warning in his eyes.
"Hand over the folder, Connor," Julian said, his tone shifting from conversational to urgent. "It's the only way to buy yourself enough time to reach the tree line before Victor’s backup surrounds the perimeter."
Victor lifted the heavy metal briefcase slightly, resting it against his thigh.

"You can keep the folder, Julian," Victor corrected, his smile widening. "I'll take the child."
