Chapter 10 - The Return of the Matriarch

The silhouette standing in the service hallway was unmistakable. Eleanor Vance stepped out of the shadows, her beige dress slightly wrinkled and her hair no longer immaculately pinned, but her posture remained as rigidly proud as ever. She walked with a steady, unhurried pace toward the foyer, ignoring the startled expressions of Arthur and Clara. In her hand, she held a satellite phone, its green indicator light blinking rhythmically in the dim light.
Victor lowered his hand from his coat, his expression hardening as he looked at the older woman.
"Mrs. Vance," Victor said, his voice laced with annoyance. "I thought you were in the back of a municipal cruiser."
Eleanor stopped a few feet away from Julian, her cold blue eyes locking onto the man who claimed ownership of her entire existence.
"Municipal cruisers belong to local governments, Victor," Eleanor said smoothly, her voice carrying its customary aristocratic chill. "And this house operates under a completely different jurisdiction. Did you really think a petty local arrest warrant could keep me away from my own dining room?"
Julian chuckled softly, shaking his head.
"You always were remarkably persistent, Eleanor," Julian said, stepping slightly to the side to give her room. "Though your persistence has finally run out of runway. The Tolin HDDEET folder is out of your hands, and the trust has been activated."
Arthur rushed toward his mother, his face flushed with a mixture of rage and betrayal.
"She knew!" Arthur shouted, pointing an accusing finger at Julian. "Mother, he says we've been living a lie for thirty years! That this house, this money, this entire life was just a rented cage!"
Eleanor did not look at her son. Her gaze remained entirely fixed on Connor, who stood silently with the sleeping baby, his hand still firmly gripping the concealed security scanner inside his beige jacket.
"Arthur, go to the kitchen," Eleanor commanded, her tone dropping into the icy register that had ruled the household for decades.
"No!" Arthur yelled, standing his ground for the first time in his adult life. "I am done taking orders from you, Mother! Tell me the truth right now, or I swear I will help Connor burn this entire estate to the ground."
Eleanor finally glanced at her son, a micro-expression of genuine disappointment crossing her face before her features hardened once more.
"The truth, Arthur, is that weakness destroys empires," Eleanor said coldly. She turned back to Julian and Victor, her chin lifting defiantly. "And neither of you has the stomach to do what is necessary to preserve it."
Victor stepped forward, his patience entirely exhausted. He dropped the heavy metal briefcase onto the marble floor with a dull thud.

"Enough games," Victor snarled. "Hand over the child and the folder, or we burn the entire property with everyone inside it."
