Chapter 11 - Ultimatum in the Foyer

The threat hung heavily in the confined space of the foyer, silencing the distant wail of the sirens outside. Victor’s hand rested casually inside his dark coat, outlining the unmistakable rectangular shape of a heavy firearm. Julian sighed, slipping his hands into his pockets as he watched the standoff with clinical detachment.

"You're making a tactical error, Victor," Julian warned softly. "The board authorized containment, not a massacre. If you cross that line, the trust will disavow you before dawn."

Victor didn't even glance at Julian. His eyes remained locked on Connor, who stood motionless, his body shielding the infant from potential crossfire.

"The board cares about results, Julian," Victor replied, taking another deliberate step forward across the threshold. "And the result I'm delivering is absolute compliance. Connor, place the child on the console table and step away. Do it now, or the next sound you hear won't be a warning."

Clara let out a muffled sob, gripping Connor’s arm so tightly her knuckles turned stark white.

"Don't do it, Connor," Clara whispered, her voice trembling violently. "If we give them the baby, we have nothing left."

Connor looked down at the infant. The baby let out a soft sigh, shifting slightly in the carrier against his chest, completely unaware of the lethal danger surrounding him. Connor slowly withdrew his hand from inside his beige jacket, keeping his palms visible to Victor.

"You want the Tolin HDDEET folder?" Connor asked, his voice steady and remarkably calm. "It's right here. Take it."

With his left hand, Connor reached inside his jacket and pulled out the thick legal folder, holding it out toward Victor.

Victor’s eyes flicked to the folder, a momentary glint of greed flashing across his face. He hesitated, his hand shifting slightly away from his coat pocket as he reached out to snatch the documents.

"Smart choice," Victor sneered, stepping within arm's reach.

"It's the only choice," Connor replied.

As Victor’s fingers brushed against the embossed gold lettering of the folder, Connor didn't let go. Instead, his right hand—which had remained hidden behind the baby carrier—suddenly snapped forward, pressing a small, heavy black device directly against the metallic clasp of Victor's heavy briefcase lying on the floor.

A sharp, high-pitched digital beep echoed through the foyer, followed by a series of rapidly blinking red LED lights.

Victor froze, his hand hovering over the folder as he looked down at the briefcase.

"What did you just do?" Victor hissed, the color draining from his face.

"I synchronized the off-site servers," Connor said, his voice dropping into a cold, hard whisper. "If this briefcase isn't scanned with your biometric authorization within thirty seconds, every financial record, asset transfer, and hidden account tied to the Tolin HDDEET directive will be broadcast directly to the Department of Justice and every major news outlet in the country."
