Chapter 12 - The Biometric Lock

The high-pitched digital beep pulsed rhythmically, counting down the seconds in a terrifyingly clinical cadence. The red LED lights cast an erratic glow across Victor’s panicked face. For the first time since he had stepped out of the black sedan, the corporate enforcer lost his iron composure.
"You're bluffing," Victor spat, though his voice lacked its previous authority. "You don't have the clearance codes to trigger a live federal sync."
"Try me," Connor replied calmly, his eyes never wavering. He maintained his grip on the heavy legal folder with one hand while keeping the synchronization device pressed firmly against the briefcase on the marble floor. "Twenty seconds, Victor. Your masters won't care about your compliance when your incompetence brings the entire house down in broad daylight."
Julian watched the standoff unfold with a look of profound amusement, slowly shaking his head.
"He isn't bluffing, Victor," Julian noted casually, taking a half-step back toward the safety of the parlor door. "Connor didn't just read the file; he memorized the protocol. Smart boy. Takes after his grandfather."
Eleanor whipped her head around to stare at Julian, her eyes wide with shock.
"What did you just say?" Eleanor demanded, her voice cutting through the electronic beeping.
Julian smiled faintly, meeting the matriarch's gaze without flinching.
"Did you really think you were the only one who left a bloodline behind in this house, Eleanor?" Julian asked softly. "Connor isn't a random interloper. He’s the rightful heir you tried to erase thirty years ago."
Arthur staggered backward, colliding heavily with the console table. He looked from Eleanor to Connor, his mind struggling to process the impossible web of lies.
"Mother... is that true?" Arthur whispered, his voice cracking. "Is he... is he family?"
Eleanor pressed her lips together into a hard, stubborn line, refusing to answer, but the profound silence of her expression spoke volumes.
"Ten seconds, Victor," Connor announced, his voice sharp and unyielding. The digital beeping sped up, shifting from a slow pulse to a frantic, continuous tone.
Victor cursed under his breath, dropped to one knee, and slammed his palm against the biometric scanner embedded in the heavy metal briefcase. A soft green light flashed instantly, silencing the alarm with a definitive click.
The synchronization halted. The red LEDs flickered out, replaced by a solid, steady blue glow indicating the data transfer had been safely locked and secured.
Victor rose slowly to his feet, breathing heavily, his suit jacket damp with nervous sweat. He looked at Connor with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You've signed your own death warrant," Victor whispered venomously.
May you like
"No," Connor replied, stepping back and pulling Clara closer to his side as he secured the Tolin HDDEET folder safely beneath his arm. "We just balanced the books."
