Chapter 2 - Threshold of Shadows

The chill of the autumn evening rushed through the open doorway, carrying the sharp scent of damp earth and exhaust fumes. The two police officers stood just inside the foyer, their boots leaving faint traces of mud on the pristine marble floor. Eleanor froze, the champagne glass suspended halfway to her mouth. For a brief second, the matriarch’s perfect composure fractured, a micro-expression of sheer disbelief flashing across her face before she smoothly set the glass down.

"There must be some mistake," Eleanor said, her voice regaining its steady, aristocratic cadence as she turned to face the intruders. "This is a private residence, and we are in the middle of a family celebration."

The lead detective, a weathered man with sharp eyes named Vance—no relation, though the coincidence hung heavily in the air—stepped past Connor without a second glance. He pulled a folded document from his coat pocket and unfolded it with deliberate slowness.

"No mistake, Mrs. Vance," the detective replied, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "We received a verified report regarding asset misappropriation, tax evasion, and corporate fraud tied directly to the Tolin HDDEET directive."

Arthur bolted upright from his seat at the dinner table, knocking his chair back a few inches. The scraping sound echoed loudly in the silent room.

"What are you talking about?" Arthur demanded, looking frantically between his mother and the police officer. "What directive?"

Connor didn't wait for an answer. He shifted the baby carrier slightly, ensuring the infant remained undisturbed by the sudden commotion, and walked past the kitchen archway where Clara stood frozen. He reached into his beige jacket and pulled out a thick, heavy legal folder embossed with gold lettering. The label on the tab read clearly: Tolin HDDEET.

Clara dropped the dish towel, her hands flying to her mouth as she watched Connor step forward into the dining area, placing himself directly between Eleanor and the authorities. The guests seated at the long table began to murmur anxiously, sliding their chairs back, eager to distance themselves from the unfolding scandal.

Eleanor’s eyes locked onto the blue folder in Connor’s hands. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her skin looking remarkably pale beneath the warm glow of the chandelier.

"You wouldn't dare," Eleanor whispered, the restrained venom in her tone failing to mask the sudden tremor in her voice.

May you like

"I already have," Connor replied, his voice steady and low. He looked directly at the detective, then back at Eleanor, before opening the folder to reveal pages of meticulously organized bank statements and signed confessions. "And the police are only here for the first page."
