Chapter 9: Dawn at the Precinct

The first pale rays of morning light began to bleed through the high, barred windows of the downtown police precinct, casting long, geometric shadows across the linoleum floor. Julian Vance sat at the edge of the metal interrogation table, his posture unchanged, his mind operating with the cold precision of a master tactician. The heavy steel door swung open, and Detective Miller walked in, holding a fresh cup of coffee in one hand and a thick manila folder in the other. Miller looked tired, the weight of a long night spent verifying shell corporations and offshore routing numbers clearly etched into the lines around his eyes. He tossed the folder onto the table in front of Julian.

"Your security guy, Marcus, dropped that off at the front desk an hour ago along with a secure data drive," Miller said, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite Julian. "Forensics opened the drive, and the state attorney general has already been briefed. We executed simultaneous search warrants on three of Arthur Vance’s primary properties thirty minutes ago." Julian looked at the folder, recognizing the brass corners of the leather ledger resting beside it. He finally allowed himself a brief, almost imperceptible sigh of relief. "And Arthur?" Julian asked calmly. "We picked him up at his estate with multiple lacerations and a very unhappy disposition," Miller replied, taking a sip of his coffee. "He’s currently being booked on charges of conspiracy, financial fraud, and the premeditated murder of your wife."

Miller leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, studying Julian with a newfound level of professional respect. "I have to hand it to you, Vance. You played a very dangerous game of wait-and-see. You knew Arthur was coming for you, and you used yourself as bait to draw him out." Julian met the detective's gaze without flinching. "I knew Arthur wanted control of the company, Detective. I did not know he was willing to use Clara’s life to achieve it. Some lines, once crossed, demand a permanent resolution." Miller nodded slowly, standing up and sliding the paperwork across the table. "You're free to go, Julian. But you'll need to be available for depositions when the grand jury convenes next week."

Julian stood up, smoothing the front of his blue suit jacket and adjusting his cuffs. He looked down at the intricate tattoo on the back of his neck in the small mirror mounted near the door, a permanent reminder of the battles he had fought and survived. "I will be available," Julian said quietly. He walked out of the interrogation room and into the bustling precinct lobby, where Marcus and Lily were waiting for him near the glass doors. Lily was still wearing her dark athletic clothes, her light brown hair falling loosely around her shoulders. As Julian approached them, the young girl looked up, her eyes searching his face for any lingering shadow of grief or defeat. Julian knelt down to her eye level, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Let's go home," he whispered.
