Chapter 8: The Rescue in the Fogs

The silence inside the SUV was shattered by the shrill, high-pitched beep of the biometric monitor synced to Lily’s tactical vest. Marcus watched in horror as the LED display on his dashboard flashed from a steady green to a frantic, flashing red. Her heart rate had spiked dramatically. "Damn it," Marcus hissed, slamming his fist against the steering wheel. Without a second hesitation, he threw the vehicle into gear, stomping on the accelerator. The SUV surged forward, tearing down the winding coastal road with its headlights turned off, relying entirely on night-vision optics to navigate the thick fog. He drove straight through the estate's secondary security gate, the heavy iron bars splintering outward under the weight of the reinforced vehicle.

Inside the study, Arthur took another step toward Lily, his expression hardening as he prepared to close the final loose end of his conspiracy. "It's a shame, really," Arthur muttered, leveling the silenced pistol at the floor just inches from Lily's feet. "You could have lived a very comfortable life if you had just stayed out of the way." Suddenly, the deep, thunderous roar of an engine echoed from the courtyard below, followed by the violent crash of the security gate collapsing. Arthur’s head whipped toward the window in surprise. Before he could react, the heavy oak doors of the study exploded inward, splintering into a thousand jagged pieces as Marcus surged into the room like a human battering ram.

Marcus didn't hesitate; he closed the distance between himself and Arthur in a fraction of a second, driving his shoulder squarely into Arthur's chest. The impact sent Arthur flying backward across the room, crashing heavily into a glass display case that shattered into a glittering cascade of shards. The silenced pistol skittered across the Persian rug, coming to rest near the base of the bookshelf. Marcus stood over Arthur, his powerful frame radiating absolute authority as he pinned the conspirator to the floor with a heavy boot on his chest. "You're done, Arthur," Marcus said, his voice a low, menacing growl.

Lily ran across the room, clutching the heavy leather ledger tightly in her arms, and stood safely behind Marcus’s protective stance. Arthur coughed, struggling to draw breath against Marcus’s weight, but a twisted smile remained plastered across his bleeding lip. "You think... you think this stops anything?" Arthur choked out, blood trickling down his chin. "The board meeting is in six hours. Even with the ledger, the SEC won't act fast enough to stop the vote. Julian will still lose everything." Marcus tightened his grip on his sidearm, keeping his eyes locked on the defeated man. "Julian is smarter than you give him credit for, Arthur. And we have the proof we need."
