Chapter 4: Shadows on the Screen

Back at the east side safe house, the glow of the computer monitors cast long, eerie shadows across the concrete walls. Lily sat on the edge of a narrow cot, her bare feet dangling just above the floor, watching Marcus work the encrypted console. The secure link to Julian had just been established, and the high-definition feed displayed Julian sitting in what appeared to be a police holding room, though his composure remained entirely unshaken. "Marcus," Julian’s voice echoed through the room’s small speakers, clear and precise despite the digital compression. "How is she?" "She's holding up," Marcus replied, standing beside the terminal. "She found something in the kitchen before we left—a receipt from an outside supplier registered under a shell corporation."

Julian’s eyes flickered toward the camera lens, processing the information instantly. "A shell corporation. Did you run the registration?" "Working on it now," Marcus said, his fingers hammering away at the keyboard. "The firewall is heavily encrypted, routed through three different offshore servers in the Cayman Islands. But I'm punching through." Lily stood up from the cot, walking over to stand beside Marcus. She peered at the complex lines of code scrolling down the screen, her young mind surprisingly adept at recognizing patterns. "Look at the numbers, Marcus," she pointed out, her small finger tapping the glass of the monitor. "They repeat every fourth line. It’s not a firewall; it’s a timestamp loop."

Marcus paused, staring at the sequence Lily had indicated. He recalibrated the decryption algorithm, feeding the repeating numbers back into the system as an administrative override. Suddenly, the screen flashed green, and a new window popped open, displaying a high-resolution shipping manifest and a series of internal emails. "Good catch, Lily," Marcus muttered, his expression darkening as he read the first document. "Julian, you're seeing this?" "I see it," Julian’s voice came through the speaker, laced with a cold, controlled fury. The shipping manifest detailed the import of restricted neurotoxins under the guise of medical research equipment, authorized and signed by Arthur Vance—Julian’s own cousin and the minority shareholder of Vance Global.

The realization hung heavily in the air. Arthur had always resented Julian’s dominance in the company, but orchestrating the murder of Clara using a biological agent crossed a line that defied family loyalty. "He's planning a hostile takeover of the board scheduled for tomorrow morning," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave. "With Clara gone and me under investigation for her murder, the voting shares revert to the executive committee, where Arthur holds the majority proxy." Marcus gripped the edge of the desk. "We need to stop that meeting, Julian. If Arthur takes control of the assets, he’ll liquidate everything, and neither you nor Lily will be safe anywhere in the world."
