Chapter 3: The Interrogation Room

The sterile lights of the precinct interrogation room hummed with a low, monotonous drone that seemed designed to fray the nerves. Julian sat at the metal table, his posture unyielding, his blue suit crisp despite the chaos of the past hour. Detective Miller leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed over his chest, studying the man who commanded half the city's financial infrastructure with a mixture of suspicion and grudging respect. "Your wife is dead, Mr. Vance," Miller said, his voice devoid of sympathy. "An autopsy hasn't been completed yet, but the paramedics on the scene are calling it acute cardiac arrest brought on by an unknown substance. And yet, you haven't shed a single tear."

Julian looked up, his dark eyes steady and unreadable. "Grief takes many forms, Detective. Some people scream and break things. Others calculate." Miller pushed off the doorframe and stepped closer to the table, slamming a sealed evidence bag down onto the metal surface. Inside was the silver spoon and the remaining portion of the chocolate dessert, its gold leaf gleaming mockingly under the fluorescent lights. "The lab ran a preliminary scan on the coulis. It wasn't heart failure. It was tetrodotoxin, refined to act within seconds. Someone wanted her dead, and they wanted it to happen at your table, during your anniversary dinner."

Julian remained silent, his mind racing through the implications. Tetrodotoxin was an extremely rare neurotoxin, nearly impossible to acquire legally and difficult to administer without leaving a trace. It required specialized knowledge and elite connections. He knew instantly that this was no random act of violence or a disgruntled employee seeking revenge. This was a targeted strike orchestrated by someone within their inner circle—someone who knew Clara’s habits, her fondness for imported sweets, and the exact layout of The Apex kitchen. "Have you identified the pastry chef on duty?" Julian asked calmly, ignoring the detective's accusatory tone.

Miller narrowed his eyes. "The chef checked out through the back exit ten minutes before the incident. Security footage shows him leaving in a delivery van that was later found abandoned near the harbor. The cameras were wiped. It was a professional job, Mr. Vance. Which brings us back to you. Who wants you ruined, and who was willing to kill your wife to send a message?" Julian leaned back in his chair, folding his hands neatly on the table. He thought of Lily, currently safe in the east side hideout with Marcus, holding the key to the entire puzzle in her small hands. "I am a businessman, Detective. In my world, enemies are a dime a dozen. But assassins? That requires a very specific kind of partnership. I suggest you look at the board members of Vance Global. Someone among them stands to gain everything from my collapse."
