Chapter 5: The Heir’s Secret

Arthur Vance paced the length of his mahogany-paneled office on the top floor of the Vance Global tower, a crystal glass of bourbon clinking against his ringed fingers. The city lights stretched out beneath his floor-to-ceiling windows, a glittering empire that he was moments away from claiming entirely as his own. His phone buzzed on the desk, vibrating insistently against the polished wood. He strode over and picked it up, pressing the receiver to his ear. "Is it done?" Arthur asked, his voice low and demanding. "The police have Julian detained at the precinct," a tense voice replied on the other end. "He hasn't broken, but the media is having a field day with the poisoning angle. The board is terrified of the scandal."

Arthur smiled, a cold, humorless stretching of his lips. "Good. Let them panic. Fear makes people compliant. Ensure the emergency vote goes through at nine o'clock sharp tomorrow morning. I want all of Julian’s overseas accounts frozen before the market opens." He hung up the phone without waiting for a confirmation. He walked over to the private wall safe hidden behind a modern art installation, spun the heavy dial, and pulled open the heavy steel door. Inside, resting on a velvet tray, was the duplicate key to the primary vault and a thick manila folder labeled simply: The Contingency.

What Arthur didn't know was that every movement in his office was currently being monitored in real-time. Back at the east side safe house, Lily and Marcus watched the high-definition feed intercepted from the office’s smart-home security hub. Marcus had managed to tap into Arthur’s private network using the credentials recovered from the shipping manifest. "He's moving fast," Marcus observed, watching Arthur lock the safe. "He thinks he’s already won." Lily crossed her arms, her young face hardening with a determination that seemed far beyond her years. "He forgot about the other safe," she said quietly.

Marcus turned to look down at her. "What other safe, Lily?" Lily walked closer to the monitor, pointing to the architectural blueprints of the Vance estate that Marcus had pulled up earlier. "When Clara and I used to play hide-and-seek in the old mansion, she showed me the floor plans of Arthur's private study. There's a secondary wall cavity behind the main bookshelf—not the one on the camera. That's where he keeps the physical ledger with the signatures of the co-conspirators." Marcus stared at the blueprints, realizing the tactical advantage this intelligence provided. "If we get that ledger, we don't just stop a hostile takeover; we expose the entire conspiracy to the federal authorities in one clean sweep."

Julian’s voice broke through the audio link, steady and resolute. "Marcus, listen to me. You can't break into the Vance estate tonight; it's crawling with private security forces loyal to Arthur. But Lily is small enough, and she knows the old service tunnels that run beneath the property from our childhood." Marcus immediately shook his head. "No. Absolutely not. I am not sending a ten-year-old girl into a heavily guarded compound." Lily looked up at Marcus, her eyes shining with absolute clarity. "I'm the only one who can get in without tripping the laser grids, Marcus. You taught me how to move silently. We don't have a choice."
