Chapter 6 - The Blue Lights

The flashing red and blue illumination painted eerie, rhythmic patterns across the white walls of the living room, casting long, jittery shadows over the furniture. The heavy pounding at the front door grew more insistent, accompanied by a muffled voice identifying itself as local law enforcement. Clara stood frozen with her smartphone in her hand, the screen glowing brightly with the federal flag database error code, while Sarah’s carefully constructed composure completely shattered. The color drained entirely from Sarah’s face, leaving her looking sickly and fragile beneath the harsh emergency lights.
"You called them?" Sarah hissed, her voice rising in sudden panic as she lunged toward Clara with her nails bared. "You actually called the federal marshals?"
David instinctively jumped forward, not to protect Clara, but to grab Sarah’s arm and hold her back before she could physically assault her sister.
"Sarah, stop! Don't make it worse!" David yelled, his own voice cracking with mounting terror as the sound of a master key rattling in the front door lock echoed through the foyer.
Martha stood like a statue near the coffee table, watching the chaotic scene unfold with a deadened expression. The home she had built, the family she had sacrificed everything to protect, was disintegrating into a criminal investigation right before her eyes. She didn't try to stop the police, nor did she attempt to comfort her youngest daughter. The betrayal ran far too deep for maternal instincts to override the raw shock of reality.
The front door swung open with a heavy thud, and two uniformed officers stepped into the foyer, their hands resting cautiously on their utility belts as they assessed the tense domestic standoff.
"Seattle Metropolitan Police Department. We received an automated fraud alert tied to this address," the lead officer announced, his voice booming authoritatively through the quiet house. "Step away from each other and keep your hands where we can see them."
Sarah spun around to face the officers, her posture shifting instantly from aggressive conspirator to terrified victim in a masterclass of psychological manipulation. She forced a tear to slip down her cheek, her voice trembling with practiced fragility.
"Officer, thank goodness you're here," Sarah sobbed, pointing a shaking finger directly at Clara. "My sister has completely lost her mind. She’s been forging financial documents, and when I tried to stop her, she threatened me with physical violence."
Clara stared at her sister in absolute awe, stunned by the sheer audacity and speed of Sarah’s pathological lying. The officers immediately shifted their gaze toward Clara, noting the grey jumpsuit and the smartphone still clutched tightly in her trembling hand.
"Ma'am, step away from the device and place your hands behind your back," the officer instructed, taking a slow step toward Clara while unholstering his cuffs.
Clara didn't move an inch. Instead, she raised the smartphone screen directly toward the officer's chest, displaying the biometric data and the cloud-synced audio file that had been recording the entire conversation since the moment Sarah walked through the door.

"Before you put those cuffs on me, officer," Clara said, her voice eerily calm and clear in the flashing red light, "you might want to listen to the last three minutes of audio where my sister confesses to forging my identity and stealing five thousand dollars from our mother."
