Chapter 13 - The Waking Room

The harsh, fluorescent glare of a hospital ceiling tile was the first thing Clara saw when her eyes finally fluttered open. The steady, rhythmic beep of a cardiac monitor filled the sterile room, accompanied by the quiet hum of an IV pump dripping saline into the back of her left hand. Clara tried to sit up, but a wave of sharp nausea hit her instantly, forcing her back down against the crisp white pillows.
"Easy now, honey. You're safe," a familiar, raspy voice whispered from the chair beside the bed.
Clara turned her head slowly, wincing as a dull ache throbbed behind her temples. Martha was sitting in the vinyl hospital chair, looking pale and exhausted, but her eyes were alert and filled with a fierce, protective determination.
"Mom..." Clara croaked out, her throat feeling like sandpaper. "Where... where are we?"
"St. Jude’s General Hospital downtown," Martha replied softly, reaching out to squeeze Clara’s unencumbered hand. "The county sheriff's department tracked your satellite distress beacon to the storage facility just minutes after the gas canister went off. If those emergency responders had arrived thirty seconds later... we wouldn't be having this conversation."
Clara’s eyes widened in sudden panic as she remembered the events leading up to her blackout. She ripped her hand away from the IV line, ignoring the slight pinch, and frantically searched the small bedside table.
"The USB drive," Clara gasped, scanning the surface of the table. "Did the deputies secure the USB drive from the router? It had the master data dump from Apex Holdings!"
Martha reached into the pocket of her cardigan and pulled out a small, black plastic object, placing it gently into Clara’s palm.
"The lead investigator handed this to me before you woke up," Martha said, a grim smile touching the corners of her mouth. "He said it was plugged right into your phone when they found you unconscious on the floor. Apparently, whatever was on that drive triggered a massive, state-wide grand jury subpoena early this morning."
Clara let out a long, shuddering breath of relief, clutching the USB drive tightly against her chest as if it were a fragile talisman.
"Did they catch the person in the tactical mask?" Clara asked, her voice dropping as she recalled the figure who had spoken to her through the respirator.
Martha’s expression darkened instantly, the warmth draining from her features.
"No," Martha said quietly. "By the time the deputies breached the storage unit, the facility was completely empty. But they did find something else left behind on the floor right beside you."
Martha reached over and picked up a small, evidence-tagged plastic bag resting on the bottom shelf of the bedside table. Inside the bag sat a single piece of polished metal that caught the overhead light.
It was David's wedding ring.
"The police think David coordinated the entire trap from inside his holding cell using a smuggled contraband burner phone," Martha explained, her voice heavy with disgust. "He traded information on our movements to Apex Holdings in exchange for a guaranteed escape route once the foreclosure went through."

Clara stared at the ring, the final illusion of her marriage completely shattering into dust. Before she could process the betrayal, the heavy hospital room door swung open, and a tall man in a sharp charcoal suit stepped inside, flashing an FBI badge before closing the door firmly behind him.
