Chapter 14 - The Federal Subpoena

The man in the charcoal suit introduced himself as Special Agent Vance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s White-Collar Crime Division—a coincidence of nomenclature that sent an ironic chill down Clara’s spine. He pulled up a chair opposite Martha, resting a thick manila folder across his knees as he surveyed Clara with sharp, professional eyes.

"Ms. Miller, I'm glad to see you're recovering," Special Agent Vance said smoothly, his voice commanding immediate attention. "We decrypted the data dump your emergency beacon transmitted from the storage unit router this morning. What you handed over to us isn't just local fraud; it’s the smoking gun for a multi-state real estate syndicate."

Clara sat up a bit higher in the hospital bed, ignoring the lingering dizziness as the adrenaline kicked back into her system.

"Apex Holdings," Clara said, her voice steady and clear. "They've been systematically forging deeds and forcing elderly homeowners out of their properties across the entire district using insider banking access and corrupt notaries."

Special Agent Vance nodded approvingly, opening the folder to reveal a series of printed organizational charts and financial flowcharts.

"Precisely," Vance confirmed. "Your sister Sarah was just a low-level pawn recruited through an online financial scam forum six months ago. But the man pulling the strings at the top is corporate director Marcus Vance—no relation to me, unfortunately. And as for your husband, David..." The agent paused, sliding an arrest warrant across the table. "He wasn't just an unwitting accomplice. He was the internal loan officer who originally approved the fraudulent second mortgage on your family home."

Martha gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as the final, devastating piece of the puzzle clicked into place. David hadn't just been coerced by Sarah; he had been the architect inside the banking institution who made the illegal transfer possible from the very beginning.

"He sold us out," Martha whispered, tears welling in her eyes once again. "My own home, signed away by my own son-in-law for a cut of the developer's kickbacks."
