Chapter 12 - The White Vapor

The thick, white vapor billowed out from the dropped canister with alarming speed, instantly filling the lower half of the storage unit and obscuring the floor in a dense, blinding fog. Clara grabbed Martha by the arm, coughing as the first tendrils of the gas reached their faces, carrying a sharp, chemical scent that burned the back of their throats.
"Hold your breath! Don't inhale it!" Clara yelled, yanking her jacket collar up over her nose and mouth while grabbing the portable USB drive from the router port.
Martha stumbled, her knees buckling as the rapid onset of dizziness hit her system. The gas wasn't just smoke; it was a fast-acting sedative designed to incapacitate intruders within seconds. Clara caught her mother before she hit the concrete, dragging her toward the corner farthest from the vent where a tiny pocket of cleaner air still lingered near the ceiling.
"Clara... I can't..." Martha mumbled, her eyelids fluttering weakly as her body went limp against Clara’s side.
"Stay with me, Mom! Keep your eyes open!" Clara shouted, her own vision beginning to blur at the edges as the toxic fog rolled higher up the walls.
With her free hand, Clara fished her smartphone out of her pocket, tapping blindly at the screen to activate the emergency satellite beacon app she had installed for her remote hiking trips. The app didn't rely on local cellular towers; it transmitted a direct distress signal via low-earth orbit satellites to emergency responders, along with their precise GPS coordinates down to the exact unit block.
The screen flashed a reassuring blue: Signal Transmitted. Rescue En Route.
Just as Clara hit the send button, the heavy steel door of the storage unit clicked loudly and began to swing inward. A tall figure stepped through the swirling white vapor, wearing a dark tactical jacket and a black respirator mask that concealed their features completely. The figure moved with cold, deliberate efficiency, stepping past the rows of cardboard boxes straight toward Clara and Martha in the corner.
Clara tried to stand, shielding her unconscious mother with her body, but her legs refused to cooperate. The sedative had entered her bloodstream, turning her limbs to lead.
The masked intruder stopped a few feet away, reaching down to pick up the manila envelope containing the Apex Holdings deed from the table.
"You really should have minded your own business, Ms. Miller," a distorted, electronic voice filtered through the intruder's respirator mask. "Your sister understood the rules of the game. Unfortunately, you lack her flexibility."
Clara squinted through the haze, her vision tunneling rapidly as consciousness slipped away. Before the darkness completely claimed her, she saw the intruder pull a small silver object from their pocket and drop it right beside Martha’s hand.
It was David's missing wedding ring.

As the sound of approaching sirens finally wailed faintly from the street outside, the masked figure turned and vanished back out through the open door into the smoke-filled corridor, leaving Clara and Martha trapped in the sinking ship of a conspiracy far larger than they had ever imagined.
