Chapter 11 - The Trapped Steel

The heavy steel door of Unit 408 rattled violently as Clara threw her weight against it, but the deadbolt held firm, locking them inside the windowless concrete tomb. The sudden plunge into darkness was absolute, save for the dim emergency strip lighting running along the baseboards near the floor. Martha rushed to the door behind Clara, pounding her fists against the cold metal until her knuckles bruised.
"Hey! Let us out of here!" Martha screamed, her voice echoing down the empty concrete corridor outside. "Open this door right now!"
"Mom, save your breath," Clara said, her voice terrifyingly calm as she pulled her smartphone out of her pocket. "There's no cellular reception down here in the basement level. The concrete walls are completely lead-lined."
Clara flipped on the flashlight feature of her phone, sweeping the beam across the rows of cardboard boxes until it illuminated the open file folders they had just been inspecting. The manila envelope containing the Apex Holdings deed lay on top of a plastic crate, the red wax seal glinting under the harsh LED light.
"They locked us in," Martha said, her breathing growing shallow as the claustrophobia of the small space began to press in on her. "Apex Holdings knew we were coming. That live feed in the living room must have alerted them the second we accessed the unit."
Clara didn't panic. She walked back over to the table where the laptop had been sitting and inspected the heavy cellular router she had unplugged moments earlier. A tiny amber indicator light on the back of the device was still pulsing intermittently on an internal backup battery, transmitting a short-range Bluetooth ping to a receiver positioned just outside the storage unit door.
"It's a trap, but it's also a transmitter," Clara muttered to herself, kneeling down beside the router.
"What are you doing, Clara?" Martha asked, leaning against the concrete wall for support as she tried to regulate her breathing. "We need to find a crowbar or a fire extinguisher to break through that door before whoever locked us in decides to come back."
"If we break out now, we're just playing their game," Clara replied, her fingers flying across the auxiliary ports on the back of the router. "Sarah didn't build this network alone. She was just a local asset for Apex Holdings. Victor Vance is the mastermind behind the entire neighborhood land-grab, and whatever is stored on this router's local cache contains the master list of every compromised property deed in the county."
Clara pulled a small USB drive out of her jacket pocket—a secure data recovery tool she used for her freelance design work—and jammed it directly into the router's data port. The amber light flashed rapidly from yellow to brilliant green as the device initiated an emergency data dump, pulling gigabytes of encrypted files directly from the local cache into her portable drive.
Martha watched the door anxiously, listening for any sound of footsteps in the hallway outside.
"Clara, hurry," Martha urged, wringing her hands. "I hear something moving near the end of the hall."
Clara hit the final keystroke on her phone, which was tethered to the router via a short cable, just as the data transfer progress bar hit one hundred percent.

Suddenly, a strange, high-pitched whining sound emanated from the ceiling vent directly above them. Clara looked up, shining her phone's flashlight beam toward the metal grating. A small, circular canister had just dropped through the vent slats, hitting the concrete floor with a hollow clatter and immediately beginning to spew a thick, white, odorless vapor into the confined space.
