Chapter 9

The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed sharply in the silent living room. Mark didn't resist as Agent Vance stepped close, gently taking his wrist and securing the cold steel band around his right arm before clicking the second ring into place. The weight of the metal felt heavy, grounding him in a reality he had spent years trying to ignore.

"Mark Vance, you are detained under suspicion of financial conspiracy and unauthorized access to government-subsidized accounts," Agent Vance recited formally, her voice devoid of personal emotion. She pulled his arm back just enough to secure the second cuff, completing the binding.

Elena watched from near the stairs, her own zip-ties biting into her wrists as she shook her head in sheer disbelief. "It's a family tradition, isn't it?" she muttered bitterly, her voice cracking with exhaustion. "We're all just pawns in Clara's little tactical exercise. She planned this entire thing from day one."

Arthur shifted against the kitchen island, his aristocratic composure entirely shattered. His slicked-back hair was slightly disheveled, and his wire-rimmed glasses had slipped down his nose. "Clara, you psychotic old woman," Arthur hissed, glaring across the room at his aunt. "You used the foundation to settle old military grudges, and you let us take the entire fall for your embezzlement scheme."

Clara didn't blink. She slowly lifted her wooden cane, planting the rubber tip firmly against the hardwood floor with a dull, rhythmic thud. She stepped forward, her posture rigid and uncompromising inside the faded green military jacket.

"You both built empires on the backs of wounded soldiers, believing your corporate titles and legal loopholes made you untouchable," Clara said, her voice cutting through the room with absolute authority. "I didn't invent your greed; I simply constructed the trap that allowed it to destroy you."

Mark looked at his grandmother, the raw betrayal burning hotter than any anger he had ever felt. "You used me, Grandma. I gave up my career, my reputation, my entire life to help run this foundation, and you framed me for your crimes just to settle a departmental war."

"I gave you a purpose, Mark," Clara corrected sharply, stopping just a few feet away from him. Her weathered face showed no trace of remorse, only the hardened resolve of a veteran who had executed countless hard orders in her past. "In the field, you don't protect the individual soldier; you protect the mission. The Vance Foundation was built to honor those who bled for this country, not to fund your luxury apartments and shell companies."

"And what about you?" Mark spat back, his voice straining against the cuffs. "Are you going to walk out of here a hero?"

Before Clara could answer, Agent Vance stepped between them, placing a firm hand on Mark's shoulder to guide him toward the shattered front doorway. "The operation isn't concluded yet, Mr. Vance. There’s one more name on the manifest."
