Chapter 12

The name hung in the quiet air of the fifth-floor apartment like a physical weight. Robert Vance. For twelve years, his name had only been spoken in hushed whispers or found on cold memorial plaques dedicated to those who had fallen during the infamous financial restructuring of the foundation. He was supposed to be dead—officially declared deceased following a tragic, fiery car crash on a desolate highway outside of Phoenix in twenty-one-ten.
Clara stared at the tactical tablet, her eyes locked on the grainy reflection captured by the holding facility's security camera. The man standing behind Mark in the glass wore a tailored dark suit, his short brown hair streaked with silver at the temples, bearing an unmistakable, haunting resemblance to both Mark and the old photographs hanging in the foundation archives.
"He's been dead for over a decade," Clara stated, her voice dangerously low, refusing to let the panic crack her disciplined exterior. "I personally identified the remains at the coroner's office in Arizona."
"The coroner's office was compromised during the corporate acquisition wars," Marcus reminded her quietly, tapping the tablet to pull up a secondary string of encrypted data. "Robert didn't die in that crash, Clara. He staged it to protect himself from the very people Arthur and Elena were working for. He’s been operating from the shadows the entire time, managing the black-ops veteran recovery fund through a proxy network you didn't even know existed."
Mark’s father wasn't just a ghost; he was the hidden architect who had engineered every single financial maneuver that Clara had spent the last ten years fighting to control.
"If Robert is alive, and he's currently inside the federal holding facility with Mark..." Clara trailed off, her mind racing through tactical permutations with the speed of a seasoned commander. She looked toward the oversized windows where the flashing patrol lights were beginning to fade as the police units prepared to depart. "He didn't come back to hide. He came back to finish the audit."
Marcus slipped the tactical tablet back into his trench coat pocket, his expression grim. "The federal prosecutors think they're arresting a small-scale embezzlement ring. But Robert’s return means the entire federal indictment against Mark, Elena, and Arthur was just a diversion to draw out the real targets."
"Us," Clara finished, a cold, fierce light returning to her eyes. She gripped her oak cane tightly, her posture straightening inside the faded green military jacket. "He thinks he can walk back into my command room and take control of the foundation."

Before Marcus could reply, the secure comms earpiece hidden beneath his collar emitted a short, sharp static burst, followed by an automated emergency alert siren blaring from the tablet in his pocket.
Marcus pulled the device back out, his face draining of color as he read the new incoming notification. "Clara... the transport convoy carrying Mark, Elena, and Arthur just missed its scheduled checkpoint. The tracking signal went dark three blocks away from the federal facility."
