Chapter 1

Sunlight sliced through the oversized windows of the fifth-floor apartment, illuminating dust motes dancing around the staircase. Clara Vance, sixty years old with closely cropped silver hair and a faded green military jacket adorned with tarnished service badges, planted the rubber tip of her heavy oak cane firmly against the hardwood floor. The sound was sharp, authoritative, and entirely final.

Elena crouched near the bottom of the wooden steps, her shoulders trembling beneath a beige button-down shirt. Her dark hair fell messily across her face, framing eyes wide with raw, unfiltered panic. She pressed her back hard against the banister as if trying to merge with the timber.

"You're really just going to stand there?" Elena shrieked, her voice cracking as she whipped her head toward the middle of the room. "Mark, do something! She’s out of her mind!"

Mark didn't flinch. At thirty-five, with neat brown hair and a crisp blue button-down shirt, he looked remarkably detached from the escalating chaos. He stood beside the minimalist kitchen island, his thumb lazily scrolling across the screen of his smartphone. He didn't look up at Elena’s plea; his eyes remained fixed on the glowing display, reflecting a steady, cold blue light.

Clara raised the cane slightly, keeping the tip aimed at Elena’s chest like a bayonet. Her face was a mask of hardened stone, forged from decades of discipline and an unforgiving life.

"Stop your whining, Elena," Clara commanded, her voice dropping an octave, carrying the weight of absolute authority. "No one is coming to save you from a debt that’s overdue. Transfer the five thousand right now."

"I don't have it!" Elena sobbed, pressing her hands flat against the floor. "The account is locked! You can't just force people to—"

"I can and I will," Clara interrupted, stepping closer, the military badges on her jacket clinking softly with the movement. "You thought you could bury the truth beneath fake receipts and shell companies? My patience expired ten years ago."

Mark finally lowered his phone, his expression unreadable. He walked slowly toward the two women, stopping just a few feet away from Clara. He tapped the screen once more, waking up an application that displayed a detailed investigator profile with photos, case files, and a bold banner reading: Investigators. Find and reveal truth. Earn the reward.

With a deliberate motion, Mark pressed his index finger against the glass, tapping the screen to upload a hidden folder of financial records directly to an external database. He looked down at Elena, a faint, chilling smile touching the corner of his mouth.

"The transfer went through, Grandma," Mark said softly, his voice cutting through the silence. "And the federal auditors just received the notification."
