Chapter 2

The silence that followed Mark’s words was heavy, suffocating the bright living room. Elena stopped crying instantly, her breath catching in her throat as the color drained entirely from her face. She stared at Mark’s phone as if the small rectangle of glass and metal were about to explode. The heavy oak cane remained planted inches from her collarbone, a constant, physical reminder of Clara’s unyielding siege.

"You... you what?" Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the apartment's central air conditioning. She pushed herself up slightly from the floor, her gray trousers sliding against the polished wood. "You sent it to the feds? Mark, we talked about this. That file destroys our entire family!"

"It destroys you, Elena," Mark corrected smoothly, stepping past Clara without a second glance. He slipped his phone into his pocket, though his hand remained casually resting over it. "Let's not pretend you're protecting a legacy. You've been systematically draining the Vance Foundation trust accounts for the past three years, routing every penny into offshore accounts registered under dead aliases."

Clara lowered the cane an inch, though her grip did not loosen. Her faded green jacket rustled as she shifted her weight, her eyes narrowing as she studied Elena’s panicked expression. "I told you, Elena. Military intelligence doesn't miss details. It just takes time to build a case that holds up in a real courtroom, not the family court games you've been playing."

Elena stumbled backward up the first two steps of the staircase, clutching the wooden banister for support. The initial terror in her eyes was rapidly morphing into a calculated, desperate cunning. She wiped a stray tear from her cheek with the back of her hand, her breathing evening out as she realized the game of pathetic defense was no longer working.

"You think the federal auditors are going to stop with me?" Elena laughed, a harsh, humorless sound that echoed off the high ceilings. She straightened her beige shirt, regaining a fraction of her composure. "If those files go through, Mark, your name is on the secondary routing list. You signed the acquisition forms for the Chicago property back in twenty-twenty-two."

Mark’s calm exterior cracked for a fraction of a second. A micro-expression of surprise flickered across his face before he locked his jaw, his eyes hardening into ice. "That property was purchased legally through an approved corporate grant."

"Was it?" Elena leaned forward over the banister, a triumphant smirk breaking through her fear. "Check the attachment you just uploaded, genius. I added the unredacted board minutes right before you hit send."
