Chapter 7

The heavy oak door rattled violently under the force of a second, much heavier strike from the hallway. The metallic deadbolt groaned, and the wooden frame splintered slightly around the latch, scattering tiny flakes of white paint across the entryway floor.
Elena let out a short, terrified gasp, stumbling backward until her legs hit the bottom of the stairs, causing her to sit down hard on the wood once more. She pulled her knees up to her chest, her hands trembling as she stared at the splintering door.
Arthur didn't panic, but his aristocratic posture vanished entirely. He grabbed his leather briefcase from the kitchen island, his fingers frantically working the brass combination latches. "This is a procedural error," Arthur snapped, his voice sharp and defensive. "My firm retains exclusive jurisdiction over these corporate assets. They can't execute a seizure without a circuit court injunction!"
"Tell it to the marshals, counselor," Clara said coldly, standing her ground near the center of the living room, her oak cane planted firmly beside her boots. She didn't look like an aging woman cornered in her own home; she looked like a commanding officer holding a strategic hilltop.
Mark remained frozen by the oversized windows, the flashing red and blue lights from the street casting long, distorted shadows across his face. He watched Arthur struggle with the briefcase latches, the betrayal burning deep in his gut. For twelve years, Mark had trusted Arthur’s legal guidance, believing he was protecting the family legacy. Now, seeing the panic in the lawyer's eyes, the entire illusion dissolved into ash.
"Stop messing with the briefcase, Arthur," Mark said, his voice dangerously quiet. "It's over. The firewall is down."
Before Arthur could reply, the door gave way with a resounding crash. The reinforced wooden frame splintered inward, and three federal marshals in tactical gear poured into the apartment, their movements swift, coordinated, and utterly disciplined. The lead officer, a tall woman with her dark hair pulled back into a tight bun and a silver badge gleaming on her tactical vest, scanned the room in a single sweep. Her eyes locked instantly on Arthur’s hands hovering over the open briefcase.
"Hands on your head! Do it now!" the marshal commanded, her voice cutting through the room with absolute authority.
Arthur froze, his fingers twitching above the documents inside the briefcase before slowly raising his hands into the air, stepping back until his spine hit the kitchen island. "Agent Vance. There has been a profound misunderstanding. I am legal counsel for the—"
"Quiet," Agent Vance interrupted sharply, stepping forward. She didn't look like a stranger to the room; in fact, as she stepped closer to Clara, a subtle, knowing nod passed between the older woman in the military jacket and the federal agent.
Elena watched in absolute horror as two additional marshals moved toward the stairs, zip-ties in hand, their eyes fixed directly on her cowering form.
"Wait, you don't understand!" Elena cried out, throwing her hands up defensively. "I was just following orders! Ask him! Ask Arthur!"

"Save it for the magistrate, Ms. Vance," the lead marshal said coldly, stepping over the splintered wood of the front door as she reached into her tactical vest to pull out a secure digital tablet. She tapped the screen once, displaying a digital warrant with a bold red seal. "Elena Vance, Arthur Sterling, you are both formally detained under federal indictment for wire fraud, corporate asset stripping, and conspiracy against a federal trust."
Mark watched the scene unfold in stunned silence, his phone still gripped tightly in his hand. He took a hesitant step forward, waiting for his name to be called next, only to watch the lead marshal turn her gaze from Elena and Arthur straight toward him.
