Chapter 4 - The Vault in the Study

The mention of the study master file seemed to drain the last remaining ounce of defiance from Arthur’s posture. He slumped against the hallway wall, his breathing turning shallow and ragged as the reality of decades of deception crashed down upon him. Helen, however, hardened her stance, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom as she looked from Connor to the flash drive resting in the sergeant’s palm. She knew the study better than anyone; she was the one who had hidden the wall safe behind the mahogany bookshelves, believing its contents were buried forever.
“You broke into my study,” Helen stated, her voice dangerously calm, devoid of any emotional crack. “You broke into private property, violating multiple privacy laws and trespassing on residential land. Whatever is on that drive is inadmissible fruit of a poisonous tree.”
The sergeant took the metal drive, sliding it securely into his breast pocket before looking back at Helen with a practiced, stone-cold expression.
“When a federal magistrate signs a warrant based on probable cause of corporate homicide and grand-scale financial fraud, Mrs. Vance, the privacy laws protecting your study cease to exist. Mr. Hayes didn't break in; he exercised his legal guardianship rights as the sole surviving heir of David’s estate.”
Chloe shifted the baby in the carrier, feeling the tiny body relax against her own as the tension in the room shifted entirely away from them and onto the crumbling foundation of Helen’s empire. For years, Chloe had lived under Helen’s thumb, subjected to endless psychological torment, treated like an unpaid servant in her own marital home, told repeatedly that she was lucky to have a roof over her head. Now, seeing the architects of her misery brought low by their own historical crimes, a wave of profound, aching relief washed over her.
“You’re an ungrateful little parasite, Chloe,” Helen spat, turning her venomous gaze toward her daughter-in-law with sudden, desperate fury. “I took you in when you had nothing, gave you a family, a home, a future, and this is how you repay us? By conspiring with this ungrateful husband of yours to steal everything we built?”
“You didn’t take me in, Helen; you trapped me,” Chloe replied, her voice steady and clear, carrying none of the trembling fear that had defined her existence for the past three years. “You isolated me, you controlled every penny, and you made sure I believed I was entirely dependent on your cruelty. But it ends tonight.”
Connor stepped closer to his wife, placing a protective hand on her shoulder while keeping his eyes locked on the police sergeant.
“Officer, we need to secure the study immediately before they have a chance to purge the secondary hard drives. There’s a physical ledger in the wall safe that details every bribe paid to local officials over the last thirty years.”
Arthur let out a ragged, desperate sob, sliding down the wall until he sat crumpled on the Persian rug, clutching his head in his hands.
“Don’t do it, Helen,” Arthur whimpered, rocking back and forth. “It’s over. We can’t fight this anymore. The ledgers... the ledgers will put us away for the rest of our lives.”
Helen glared down at her husband with utter disgust, stepping over his crumpled form as if he were nothing more than a discarded piece of trash.

“Get up, you pathetic coward,” Helen hissed, before turning sharply back toward Connor. “You think you’ve won, Connor? You don’t even know what’s waiting for you in that safe.”
