Chapter 10 - The Secret in the Floorboards

The damp chill of the carriage house clung to the air like a shroud, smelling of damp earth, old motor oil, and decades of forgotten dust. Connor shoved the heavy wooden door shut behind them, throwing the rusted iron deadbolt into place just as the distant crunch of heavy boots echoed across the gravel path outside. He clicked on his tactical flashlight, sweeping the narrow beam across the cavernous, cluttered interior of the workshop. Rusted wrenches hung from pegboards, ancient lawnmowers sat half-dismantled under moth-eaten tarps, and a thick layer of grime covered every surface.

Thomas limped briskly toward the far corner of the room, motioning for Connor and Chloe to follow him. Chloe clutched the baby carrier tightly against her chest, her breathing ragged as she scanned the shadows for any sign of pursuit. The infant stirred slightly, letting out a soft sigh, but remained blissfully unaware of the dangerous game playing out around them.

“Over here,” Thomas muttered, stopping in front of an old wooden workbench piled high with spare car parts. He reached down, grabbing a heavy iron crowbar leaning against the wall, and jammed its tapered end beneath a scarred, water-damaged floorboard near the foundation.

With a loud, protesting screech of rusted nails giving way against aged oak, Thomas pried the board upward, revealing a dark, square cavity hollowed out beneath the floor. He dropped to his knees, reached deep into the dusty recess, and pulled out a heavy, leather-wrapped package secured with rotting twine.

“This is it,” Thomas panted, handing the heavy bundle up to Connor. “The corporate seal, the original ledger of David’s asset distribution, and the bank routing codes Helen spent thirty years trying to erase.”

Connor caught the bundle, feeling its substantial weight in his hands. He set it down gently on the workbench, cutting through the twine with his pocketknife and peeling back the stiff leather layers. Inside sat a heavy brass embosser—the official corporate seal of Vance Industries, bearing the crisp, unblemished insignia that could override any electronic biometric restriction currently locking the Swiss accounts.

“We have it,” Connor breathed, a wave of profound relief washing over his tense features. “With this, we can access the depository before the midnight deadline tomorrow.”

Suddenly, a loud, heavy thud echoed against the exterior door of the carriage house, followed by the harsh, metallic rattle of a crowbar being jammed into the doorframe.

“Open up in there!” a gruff voice shouted from the outside. “We know you’re inside! Stand away from the door!”

Helen’s voice rang out clearly over the commotion, dripping with venom and desperate rage.

“Break the damn door down! I want those papers back, and I want them out of my sight permanently!”

Chloe stepped back, her eyes wide with terror as the wood around the deadbolt began to splinter under the relentless attack from outside.

“Connor, they’re going to break in! There’s no other exit from this room!”

Thomas stood up slowly, a fierce, defiant grin cutting across his weathered face. He pointed toward a narrow, dark opening behind a rusted shelving unit in the corner.

“There is one exit,” Thomas whispered, his eyes flashing. “The old drainage tunnel leading down to the creek. Get going, both of you. I’ll hold the door.”
