Chapter 12 - The Magistrate’s Doorstep

The heavy oak doors of the federal courthouse loomed menacingly against the pre-dawn sky, their austere architecture symbolizing an unyielding fortress of justice. Connor and Chloe stood on the grand stone steps, their clothes stained with mud and damp from the drainage tunnel, their faces etched with profound exhaustion. Yet, despite the physical toll, an electric current of absolute determination hummed between them. Connor clutched the heavy brass corporate seal tightly in his right hand, while the salvaged documents rested securely inside his waterproof jacket pocket.

Chloe adjusted the baby carrier, her eyes scanning the quiet downtown street where a lone police cruiser idled near the curb, its headlights cutting through the gray morning mist.

“Do you think the magistrate will actually see us this early, Connor?” Chloe asked softly, her voice carrying a trace of lingering anxiety. “Helen has deep political connections in this city. What if her lawyers are already here?”

“They can’t block a direct petition filed under the federal witness and asset recovery act, especially not when accompanied by the original corporate seal,” Connor replied firmly, stepping up to the massive brass doors and pressing the heavy buzzer beside the intercom.

Within moments, a crackling speaker chimed, and a tired, bureaucratic voice responded.

“Federal Courthouse night intake. State your business and case file number.”

“This is Connor Hayes,” Connor spoke clearly into the metal grille, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “We are filing an emergency motion for immediate asset freeze and receivership transfer under Case File 94-8829, corroborated by physical evidence and the original corporate seal of Vance Industries.”

There was a long, tense pause on the other end of the line. The heavy internal locking mechanism of the massive oak doors clicked loudly, and the right-hand panel swung inward, revealing a brightly lit security checkpoint manned by two armed federal marshals.

“Step inside, Mr. Hayes,” the intercom instructed. “Judge Miller is waiting in chambers.”

They walked across the polished marble floor of the grand lobby, their muddy boots leaving faint tracks that the pristine environment seemed to reject, but neither of them cared. They were standing at the threshold of ultimate liberation. As they stepped into the private chambers of Judge Miller—a stern-looking woman with sharp silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses—they realized they had arrived not a moment too soon.

Sitting across from the judge’s mahogany desk, sipping coffee from a paper cup, was none other than Helen’s lead corporate attorney, looking impeccably groomed in a tailored charcoal suit. The attorney turned his head sharply as the door opened, his expression shifting from bored confidence to absolute, paralyzing shock as he saw Connor, Chloe, and the heavy brass seal resting on the table.

“Your Honor,” the attorney stammered, standing up abruptly. “This is an irregular proceeding! My client wasn’t even notified of—"

“Sit down, counsel,” Judge Miller commanded, her voice cutting through the room like a steel blade. She fixed her gaze squarely on Connor, gesturing toward the desk. “Mr. Hayes, place the evidence on the record.”
