Chapter 13 - The Collapse of the Empire

Judge Miller adjusted her wire-rimmed glasses, leaning forward over her mahogany desk to inspect the heavy brass corporate seal that Connor had placed squarely in the center of the blotter. Beside it, the yellowed ledger pages and the original land deeds lay spread out like a roadmap of calculated deceit. The federal attorney standing opposite them looked as though he had just swallowed a stone, his hands trembling slightly as he tried to scan the documents without appearing desperate.
“This seal matches the metallurgical records filed with the federal registry in 1985,” Judge Miller noted quietly, her voice carrying an undeniable weight of finality. She looked up from the papers, locking her piercing eyes onto Helen’s attorney. “Counsel, your client’s entire legal claim to the Vance estate rested entirely upon the premise that the original corporate seal and all corresponding bearer bonds were destroyed in the 1994 warehouse fire. Since Mr. Hayes has presented physical proof that the seal survived and was deliberately hidden, the entire trust is rendered null and void ab initio.”
“Your Honor, this is absurd!” the attorney protested, his voice cracking slightly. “These documents could have been forged or recovered illegally through trespassing! We demand a seventy-two-hour evidentiary hearing before any receivership order is signed!”
“Denied,” Judge Miller stated flatly, picking up a heavy steel fountain pen. “The court has verified the chain of custody through the corroborating testimony of Thomas Vance, whose affidavit was filed electronically fifteen minutes ago. Furthermore, an immediate federal receivership is hereby ordered for all Vance properties, bank accounts, and corporate holdings.”
The pen scratched across the heavy bond paper, signing away forty years of meticulously guarded wealth, corruption, and psychological control with a few definitive strokes of ink.
Connor let out a long, ragged breath that sounded like years of suppressed trauma finally leaving his lungs. He reached over, taking Chloe’s hand in his, their fingers interlocking tightly as they watched the bureaucratic machinery dismantle Helen’s untouchable empire in real-time.
