Chapter 11 - The Drainage Tunnel Escape

The iron deadbolt snapped with a sound like a gunshot as the carriage house door buckled inward under the weight of the security guards. Connor didn't hesitate; he grabbed Chloe by the arm and shoved her toward the narrow, dark opening behind the rusted shelving unit just as the heavy wooden door slammed completely open against the interior wall. The harsh beam of tactical flashlights swept across the workshop, illuminating the dusty air and catching Thomas standing squarely in the center of the room, blocking their path.

“Stop right there!” one of the guards barked, stepping forward with his hands raised defensively.

Helen pushed past the guards, her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury as her eyes locked onto the leather-wrapped package resting on the workbench.

“You pathetic old fool,” Helen snarled, glaring at Thomas. “You should have stayed at the bottom of the Cape. Grab them!”

Connor shoved the heavy brass corporate seal deep into his jacket pocket, scooped up the remaining documents, and grabbed Chloe’s hand, diving headfirst into the narrow, damp opening just as the guards lunged forward. They tumbled down a steep, sloping concrete incline that smelled of stagnant water and moss, plunging into absolute darkness as the ambient light of the workshop vanished behind them.

The drainage tunnel was cramped, forcing Connor and Chloe to crawl on their hands and knees over slick, uneven concrete while keeping the baby carriers safely cradled against their chests. Behind them, muffled shouts and the heavy clatter of boots echoed down the concrete tube as the guards attempted to follow, but the narrow diameter of the pipe severely restricted their movement.

“Keep moving!” Connor hissed over his shoulder, his knees scraping painfully against the rough floor. “Don’t look back!”

Chloe gritted her teeth, tears of frustration and exhaustion stinging her eyes, but she pushed forward with relentless determination. She could feel the infant sleeping soundly against her chest, completely insulated from the filth and chaos surrounding them. Every muscle in her body ached, but the thought of returning to Helen’s tyranny provided a wellspring of fierce, unbreakable strength.

After what felt like an eternity of crawling through the damp, claustrophobic dark, a pale circle of moonlight appeared at the far end of the tunnel. Fresh, cool air rushed in, carrying the crisp scent of autumn leaves and flowing water. With a final, desperate push, Connor emerged from the mouth of the tunnel, tumbling down a grassy embankment right onto the muddy banks of the estate’s private creek.

He scrambled to his feet immediately, turning back to reach down and pull Chloe out of the pipe. She stumbled onto the grass, coughing slightly from the damp air, but immediately checked the baby carrier. The infant was still sleeping, completely unharmed.

“We’re out,” Chloe breathed, looking up at the towering silhouette of the main house looming in the distance against the starlit sky. “Connor... where do we go now? We can’t go back to the house, and we don’t have a car.”

Connor reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out the heavy brass corporate seal and the salvaged documents, holding them up in the moonlight with a grim, resolute expression.

“We don’t need the car, Chloe. We go straight to the federal courthouse in the city. The night magistrate is on duty, and we have everything we need to strip Helen of every single thing she owns.”
