Chapter 8

The tactical officer’s helmet hit the asphalt with a hollow thud, rolling toward Valeria’s feet. As the harsh overhead light illuminated his face, Valeria felt the world tilt completely off its axis. It wasn't a mercenary, nor was it an agent from a faceless government agency. It was David—her ex-husband’s younger brother, a man who had allegedly moved to London three years ago and completely cut ties with the family.

"David?" Valeria whispered, scrambling backward until her back hit the cold metal door of the sedan. "What... what are you doing here? I thought you were overseas."

David didn't look at her. His eyes were locked with Arthur and Mrs. Vance, blazing with a cold, unforgiving fury. He lowered his rifle slightly, though his finger remained resting lightly on the trigger.

"People lie about a lot of things in this family, Valeria," David said, his voice hard and devoid of any warmth. "Especially when there are millions of dollars in untracked offshore accounts waiting to be claimed."

Arthur let out a dry, cynical laugh, shaking his head. "Well, well. The prodigal son returns. I thought your brother bought you out of the syndicate years ago, David. Did you run out of your trust fund that fast?"

"My brother is a coward," David snapped, stepping closer to Arthur until the barrel of his rifle was mere inches from the older man's chest. "He let you and Eleanor run the show while the rest of us took the fall. But the game is over. Put the key down, Arthur."

Mrs. Vance stepped smoothly between them, her composed demeanor entirely unshaken by the armed standoff. She looked at David with a chilling blend of disappointment and pity. "You always were the most dramatic of the lot, David. You think holding a gun gives you control, but you don't even know what’s inside the vault."

"I know it contains the evidence that put my father in prison," David snarled.

"Your father went to prison to protect you," Mrs. Vance corrected sharply, her voice cutting through the alley like a razor.

Valeria sat frozen on the ground, tears streaming down her face as the horrifying tapestry of lies unravelled around her. Every single person in this alley—her mother, her ex-husband’s family, Julian, Arthur—was connected by a shared history of crime, betrayal, and bloodshed. She was the only innocent person in the equation, yet she was the one paying the highest price.

Julian slowly stepped out from behind the car, holding his hands up defensively. "David, lower the weapon. We can make a deal. The vault coordinates are already uploaded to the cloud. If you shoot Arthur, the files auto-release to federal prosecutors."

David froze, his eyes darting to Julian. "You lying bastard. You set the dead man's switch?"

May you like

Julian smiled faintly, revealing a flash of teeth in the dim light. "I’m a survivor, David. Just like Eleanor."

Before anyone could make another move, the screech of tires echoed from the main street, and three unmarked police cruisers swerved into the alley, their blinding sirens flashing brilliant red and blue.
