Chapter 14

The cold metal of the biometric scanner gleamed under the harsh overhead fluorescent lights of the hidden bunker. Valeria stood frozen in the center of the room, her back nearly touching the reinforced steel door while the two armed guards loomed like statues on either side. Arthur walked toward her slowly, his footsteps echoing ominously against the concrete floor.

"Don't look so terrified, Valeria," Arthur said smoothly, stopping a few feet away from her. "You are about to unlock a legacy worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Your father built this empire for you, even if your mother tried to bury it."

Valeria narrowed her eyes, summoning every ounce of courage she had left. "My father was a criminal, and my mother was a monster. You ruined countless lives, Arthur. You think I’m going to help you access this stolen money?"

Arthur chuckled, a cold, dismissive sound. "You don't have a choice, my dear. Look at the monitors."

He gestured toward one of the massive screens on the wall. The live feed showed Julian, still tied to the chair, with a scarred man holding a heavy pistol directly against his temple.

"Julian was a fool who thought he could outsmart the syndicate," Arthur continued smoothly. "If you refuse to place your hand on that scanner, Julian dies. And within the hour, federal agents will raid this estate and arrest you as the primary co-conspirator. You’ll spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison."

Valeria stared at the screen, her breath catching in her throat. She looked down at her hands, then across the room at the glowing blue light of the biometric glass plate. Her mother’s warning echoed in her mind—*the archive can clear your name, but it demands a price.*

"If I open the vault," Valeria said, her voice shaking but fiercely resolute, "you let Julian go. Right now. And you leave this country forever."

Arthur smiled broadly, spreading his hands in a gesture of absolute agreement. "You have a deal, Valeria. Open the vault, and your precious federal agent walks free."

Valeria took a slow, deliberate step toward the console. She raised her right hand, her fingers trembling as she hovered them over the glass scanner. She thought of her mother’s cold betrayal, of Julian’s lies, of her own broken marriage, and of the endless cycle of deceit that had defined her entire existence. She realized then that running away was no longer an option. She had to end it all right here, once and for all.

She pressed her palm flat against the cold glass scanner.

The machine beeped loudly. A green light flashed, and with a heavy, grinding groan of antique gears, the massive steel wall beside the console split open, sliding back to reveal the legendary underground archive filled with rows of safety deposit boxes and thick paper ledgers.

Arthur laughed aloud, stepping forward greedily to reach into the vault—unaware that the green light on the scanner hadn't just unlocked the money, but had automatically transmitted a top-secret override code directly to the Department of Justice.
