Chapter 11

The harsh glow of the laptop screen illuminated the dark corner of the diner, casting long shadows across Valeria’s face. The waitress walked by, placed a steaming mug of black coffee on the table without a word, and vanished back behind the counter. Valeria didn't touch the mug. Her eyes were glued to the screen, scanning the delicate, sloping handwriting of her mother’s twenty-five-year-old journal entry.
July 14th.
If anyone is reading this, it means Arthur and Richard finally succeeded in their coup. I am writing this to ensure Valeria never believes the lie that her family was built on honest foundations. Richard didn't just build a real estate empire; he built a fortress of stolen lives. And I helped him lay every brick.
Valeria’s breath hitched in her throat. She scrolled down, her hands shaking so violently she could barely keep the trackpad steady. The entry detailed how her parents had systematically embezzled funds from vulnerable investors in the late nineties, funneling the money through dummy corporations to fund their luxurious Westport lifestyle. But that wasn't the most shocking part.
As she read further, a horrific realization began to form in her mind. Her father hadn't been the mastermind; her mother had been the architect of the entire syndicate, using her father as the public face while she pulled the strings from the shadows.
Richard wanted to confess and turn himself in to the authorities back in 2005, the journal continued. He said our daughter deserved a clean slate, an honest mother. But if we confessed, the syndicate would have destroyed us both—and more importantly, they would have targeted Valeria. So I made a choice. I protected the empire, and I sealed my husband's fate.
A tear slipped down Valeria’s cheek, splashing softly against the plastic table. Her mother hadn't been a victim of circumstance or a lonely widow seeking solace in the arms of a wealthy older man. She had been protecting Valeria in the only twisted, ruthless way she knew how. The restaurant scene from earlier that evening—the public confrontation, the biting insults—hadn't been a random outburst of jealousy. It was a meticulously staged performance designed to alienate Valeria completely, casting her out of the firing line just before the federal net closed in.
"She pushed me away so they wouldn't look at me," Valeria whispered to the empty booth, the crushing weight of her mother’s sacrifice finally sinking into her bones.
She scrolled to the next file on the flash drive: a video file labeled simply with her own name.

With trembling fingers, Valeria clicked play. The screen went black for a second before a video feed opened, showing her mother sitting in the very same kitchen of the Westport estate where Valeria had grown up. The lighting was soft, and Mrs. Vance looked directly into the camera lens with a serene, unreadable expression.
"If you are watching this, Valeria," her mother’s recorded voice echoed softly through the laptop speakers, "it means the end has come. And it means you finally know the monster who raised you."
