Chapter 7

The heavy brass key gleamed under the flickering streetlamp, looking entirely out of place in the grim, industrial alleyway. Valeria stared at it, her mind racing to connect the pieces of a puzzle that seemed to shift every time she thought she saw the complete picture. Arthur held the key up between two fingers, his gaze locked onto Mrs. Vance with a mixture of mutual respect and deep-seated hostility.

"You really think a key to the old Westport estate solves anything?" Arthur asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "That house has been gutted, Eleanor. The authorities swept it six months ago. There’s nothing left there except ghosts and dust."

Mrs. Vance crossed her arms, her beige blazer shifting slightly to reveal the gold earrings catching the amber light. "The authorities only found what we wanted them to find, Arthur. The true vault was never in the house. It was beneath it."

Valeria gasped, stepping closer to her mother. "Beneath it? Mom, what are you talking about? What kind of underground operation did Dad run out of our family home?"

Her mother looked down at her, a fleeting shadow of genuine sorrow crossing her features before vanishing behind her usual mask of iron resolve. "Your father was a brilliant man, Valeria, but his ambition was a cancer. He built an underground archive to protect his partners—and to blackmail them if they ever turned on him. When he died, I inherited the archive. And tonight, it ends."

The scarred man holding Valeria's arm tightened his grip, clearly losing patience. "Enough with the family history lesson. Where is the entrance to the vault?"

Arthur stepped forward, the antique key glinting in his hand. He didn't look at the scarred man; he kept his eyes fixed entirely on Mrs. Vance. "She won't tell you, you fool. Because the vault isn't unlocked by a key. The brass key is just a decoy."

Before the scarred man could react, a sharp, piercing sound echoed down the alleyway. A red laser dot danced across the chest of the scarred man, followed immediately by a second dot landing square on Arthur's shoulder. From the shadows at the mouth of the alley, three figures dressed in dark tactical gear emerged, their weapons raised and trained directly on the group.

Julian flung the driver’s side door open, shouting over the commotion. "Get down! They found us!"

Valeria dropped to the pavement, her burgundy dress tearing slightly against the rough concrete. She covered her head with her hands as absolute chaos erupted around her, the sound of shouting voices blending with the heavy boots of the approaching tactical team.

In the center of the crossfire, Mrs. Vance stood completely upright, refusing to flinch, while Arthur calmly tossed the brass key into the air, catching it with a smirk as the lead tactical officer stepped into the light and pulled off his helmet, revealing a face none of them expected to see.
