Chapter 6 - The Missing Piece

The silence in the study felt entirely different now—not heavy with deceit, but hollow and weighted with unanswered questions. Daniel stood alone by the mahogany desk, the incriminating documents spread out before him like a gruesome puzzle. Lily sat quietly in the oversized leather armchair, her small hands folded neatly in her lap, watching her father with a maturity that broke his heart. The immediate threat of Victoria was temporarily neutralized, locked away on the third floor, but the core mystery of the evening remained entirely unresolved.

“Dad?” Lily’s small voice broke the stillness. “Is mom coming back?”

Daniel turned sharply, his professional mask melting away instantly as he knelt beside her chair. He took her small, cold hands in his own, rubbing his thumbs gently over her knuckles. He had spent three years believing Clara had abandoned them, three years telling himself hate was easier than grief. Now, holding the proof of her innocence, the guilt crushed down on him with crushing weight.

“I don't know, sweetheart,” Daniel answered honestly, his voice thick with emotion. “When she gave you this handbag outside the gates… did she say anything else? Did she tell you where she was staying, or how she managed to get these documents?”

Lily shook her head, her dark hair brushing her shoulders. “No. She looked really scared, Dad. A big black car pulled up right after she gave me the bag, and two men got out. She told me to run as fast as I could toward the front doors and give it only to you. She said the bad people were watching her.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened into a knot. The documents in his hand proved Victoria and Marcus had framed Clara, but they didn't explain where Clara was right now, or why she had entrusted her eight-year-old daughter with the final piece of evidence instead of walking through the front doors herself. If Victoria and Marcus had been running this conspiracy, someone else must still be hunting Clara in the shadows.

“We are going to find her, Lily,” Daniel promised, his voice firm and resolute. “I swear to you, we are going to find your mother and bring her home.”

He stood up and walked back to the desk, picking up the final sheet of parchment from the envelope. It wasn't a bank statement or a legal contract. It was a handwritten note scrawled hastily at the very bottom of the last page, written in Clara’s familiar, elegant cursive. Daniel leaned closer to the amber light of the desk lamp to read the faint lines.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Victoria’s grip on the house has slipped, but the danger isn't over. Marcus was only the errand boy for someone much higher up—someone within your own boardroom who wanted our assets liquidated. Check the safe deposit box at the downtown Federal Trust. The key is taped to the back of the family portrait in the foyer.”

Daniel froze. The family portrait in the foyer—a massive oil painting commissioned on their tenth wedding anniversary, hanging directly opposite the grand staircase where Victoria had intercepted Lily just an hour ago.

He looked toward the study door, his heart hammering against his ribs as a cold realization washed over him. The conspiracy was far larger than Victoria and Marcus. And someone was already inside the mansion, watching their every move.
