Chapter 4 - The Confession

The sound of tearing paper echoed sharply in the quiet study, like a branch snapping in a dead forest. Daniel pulled out a folded sheaf of heavy parchment paper covered in dense, frantic handwriting. His eyes scanned the first few lines, and the color instantly drained from his face. The confident, composed businessman who ran a multi-million-dollar real estate empire suddenly looked as though he had been struck in the chest with a sledgehammer. His fingers trembled slightly as he unfolded the pages completely.

“What does it say?” Victoria whispered, her voice dropping to a harsh, breathless rasp as she took a slow step toward the desk. “What lies is she trying to feed you now?”

Daniel did not answer immediately. His eyes raced across the paragraphs, absorbing dates, financial account numbers, and names of individuals he thought he had long forgotten. Every word felt like a physical blow, unravelling the fabric of his reality thread by thread. The woman he had loved, the woman he had cast out as an unstable, ungrateful mother, had laid out a meticulously documented roadmap of a conspiracy designed to steal not only his company, but his entire family.

“She didn't leave voluntarily, Victoria,” Daniel finally spoke, his voice dangerously quiet, stripped of all human warmth. He looked up slowly, his eyes locking onto the woman in the white gown. “She was blackmailed. By you. And by my trusted advisor, Marcus Vance.”

Victoria’s face lost all its color, her lips parting in a silent gasp. For a split second, her sophisticated facade completely dissolved, revealing the panic underneath. She caught herself, forcing a brittle, nervous laugh that sounded entirely out of place.

“You’re believing a madwoman’s delusions?” Victoria stammered, backing up a step until her shoulders hit the heavy velvet window drapes. “Clara was unhinged, Daniel. She forged documents when she realized she was losing custody. Anyone can write numbers on a piece of paper.”

“These aren't just numbers,” Daniel said, standing up so abruptly that his leather chair rolled back and slammed into the bookshelf. He held up the pages, his hand shaking with rage. “These are bank transfer receipts bearing your personal signature. Receipts moving company funds into an offshore account controlled by Marcus—the exact account used to frame Clara for embezzlement right before she vanished.”

Lily watched her father, her small eyes wide with fear as she slid down from the oversized armchair and ran to his side, wrapping her arms around his leg. Daniel instantly dropped to one knee, wrapping his arm protectively around his daughter while keeping the incriminating letter clutched in his left hand.

Victoria’s eyes darted toward the heavy oak study door as if calculating her chances of outrunning the catastrophe closing in around her.

“You can’t prove a word of this,” Victoria whispered, her voice hardening into pure venom. “Marcus will protect us. And by tomorrow morning, this house will belong to me, legally and entirely.”
