Chapter 2 - The Sealed Envelope

Daniel’s fingers brushed the textured surface of the beige envelope inside the patterned handbag. The mansion around them felt suddenly suffocating, the ambient hum of the central heating system replaced by an oppressive, heavy silence. Victoria stood motionless a few feet away, her hands clasped tightly together, her knuckles whitening beneath the harsh chandelier light. She looked less like the poised mistress of the estate and more like a cornered animal waiting for a trap to snap shut.

“Daniel,” Victoria began, her voice strained and uncharacteristically thin. “Whatever that child is carrying, it’s bound to be some bitter fabrication. Clara has spent years trying to poison your mind against this family, against us. You cannot seriously entertain whatever nonsense is scribbled on that paper.”

Daniel did not look up at her. His eyes remained fixed on the unassuming envelope, noting the distinctive handwriting scrawled across the front in dark blue ink—his own full name, penned by a hand he had not seen in over three years. Clara had vanished from this estate under a cloud of whispered scandals and locked doors, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions that the courts had quickly swept under the rug. To see her handwriting now felt like a ghost reaching out from the grave to take back the life he had built over the ruins of their shared past.

“Victoria, be quiet,” Daniel commanded, his tone devoid of anger but absolute in its authority.

He slowly slid the beige envelope out of the handbag. The paper felt heavy, denser than standard stationery, suggesting multiple folded sheets or perhaps something rigid hidden inside. Lily leaned against his knee, her breathing finally beginning to steady as she sought comfort in his solid presence.

“Should I open it now, Dad?” Lily asked, her innocent eyes searching his face for guidance.

“Not here, sweetheart,” Daniel replied softly, standing up while keeping the envelope clutched firmly in his palm. He looked squarely at Victoria, whose chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid breaths. The diamond necklace at her throat trembled with every beat of her pulse. “We are going into the study. Right now. All of us.”

Victoria’s lips parted as if to protest, but the cold, unyielding look in Daniel’s eyes stopped her dead in her tracks. She swallowed hard, casting a venomous glance down at Lily before turning on her heel and marching toward the heavy oak doors of the private office. Daniel took Lily’s small hand in his free one, leading her away from the grand hallway and toward a confrontation that had been brewing for half a decade.

As they crossed the threshold of the study and the heavy door clicked shut behind them, Daniel laid the beige envelope flat on the mahogany desk, his thumb resting nervously on the sealed flap.
