Chapter 11 - The Ambush at Pier 42

The blinding high beams of an unmarked police tactical van slammed into the darkness of Pier 42, illuminating Robert Sterling like a bug trapped under a magnifying glass. The heavy roar of diesel engines drowned out the sound of the wind and rain as three black-clad tactical units poured out of the van’s side doors, their weapons raised and trained squarely on Robert.

“Federal agents! Drop your weapon! Do it now!” the lead operative bellowed, his voice echoing sharply across the empty shipping yard.

Robert froze, his suppressed pistol trembling slightly in his grip as he glanced between Daniel and the approaching armed agents. His calm, patrician composure shattered in an instant, replaced by a wild, frantic desperation. He made a split-second calculation, his arm swinging the pistol toward Daniel’s chest with murderous intent.

Before Robert’s finger could squeeze the trigger, Daniel dropped to the wet wooden planks of the pier, drawing his Glock 17 with practiced speed. A muffled crack pierced the rainy air as Robert fired blindly into the empty space where Daniel had been standing a microsecond before, the bullet splintering the wood just inches from Daniel’s shoulder.

Two rapid shots rang out from the tactical team. The rounds struck Robert in the right shoulder and thigh, spinning him violently around against the metal railing of the barge. His pistol slipped from his numb fingers, clattering loudly against the deck before sliding off the edge and plunging silently into the dark, churning waters of the harbor below.

Robert collapsed against the railing, clutching his bleeding shoulder as a low groan escaped his lips. The rain washed the fresh crimson stream across his dark trench coat, staining the fabric a deep, bruised black.

The lead tactical agent rushed forward, kicking Robert’s remaining pocket contents away before slamming him face-first onto the wet boards and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Daniel slowly stood up from the wet floor, brushing water and wood splinters from his black suit. He holstered his weapon, his breath coming in ragged, steaming gasps in the freezing night air.

“Good evening, Mr. Vance,” the lead tactical officer said, turning to face Daniel and pulling back his rain-slicked hood to reveal Detective Miller, head of the city’s anti-corruption division. “Sorry we took our time, but we needed Robert to step out into the open and commit an overt felony to secure the federal warrant for his arrest.”

Daniel nodded, letting out a breath he felt like he’d been holding for three straight years. “You got the wiretap recordings?”

“Crystal clear,” Miller replied, tapping the recorder clipped to his tactical vest. “Every word he said about the embezzlement, the framing of Clara, and the corporate takeover was picked up by our remote transceivers. Robert’s empire just collapsed in thirty seconds flat.”

Daniel reached into his wet coat pocket, retrieving the brass safety deposit box key and the beige envelope, and handed them directly to the detective. “You’ll find everything you need in Vault 412 tomorrow morning. But right now... where is my wife?”

Detective Miller pulled out his radio, keying the microphone. “Unit Four, status report on the secondary vehicle intercept downtown.”

A crackling voice broke through the static of the radio. “Target vehicle intercepted at 5th and Market. Hostiles secured. Clara Vance is safe and in our custody. We’re inbound to your location now, sir.”

Daniel closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, the crushing weight lifting from his shoulders. But as he turned to watch Robert Sterling being dragged toward the tactical van in handcuffs, a sudden, cold realization hit him. Robert had mentioned an accomplice higher up in the boardroom—someone whose name hadn't been spoken yet.
