Chapter 5 - The Digital Ghost

The downtown library parking lot was quiet, save for a few delivery vans idling near the loading dock. Maya parked her sedan around the corner, keeping the engine running as she pulled her hoodie over her head. She slipped inside the grand, stone-columned building, the cool air smelling of old paper and polished wood. Making her way to the basement computer lab, her eyes scanned the rows of glowing monitors until she spotted him.
Sitting at terminal fourteen was Marcus, her uncle’s former legal assistant, typing furiously with a USB drive blinking a neon blue light into the dim room.
Maya crept down the aisle, her footsteps muffled by the industrial carpet. She could see the reflection of her uncle’s encrypted financial database scrolling across Marcus's screen.
"Looking for something, Marcus?" Maya asked softly, stepping up directly behind his chair.
Marcus froze, his fingers hovering millimeters above the keyboard. For a second, his shoulders slumped, but then a slow, unsettling smile spread across his face. He didn't turn around.
"Maya," Marcus said smoothly, his voice devoid of any surprise. "I wondered how long it would take you to figure out the trail. Though I expected you to be in handcuffs by now."
"You stole my identity, you forged the documents, and you turned my family against me," Maya accused, keeping her voice low and controlled. "Why, Marcus? What did my uncle have on you?"
Marcus chuckled softly, leaning back in his chair and finally turning to face her. His eyes were cold, calculating, and completely remorseless. "Your uncle wasn't the saint your family thought he was, Maya. He was laundering money for a syndicate, and I was his partner. When he died, he left everything to your parents—money that rightfully belonged to us."
"So you decided to frame me and rob them instead?" Maya demanded.
"I didn't frame you, Maya. Your mother helped me," Marcus whispered, dropping a bombshell that stopped her heart. "Helen wanted financial security after your father's business failed. She signed off on the transfer papers herself."

Maya stumbled backward, the breath knocked entirely out of her lungs as Marcus casually pulled the USB drive from the terminal and stood up to face her.
