Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The front door slammed shut behind Maya as she fled the house, but the heavy echo of her father’s words followed her down the paved suburban driveway. The crisp morning air of Chicago bit at her cheeks, yet she felt strangely numb. She dragged her rolling suitcase across the cracked concrete, the wheels rattling loudly against the pavement. Her phone buzzed relentlessly in her coat pocket, vibrating with missed calls and furious text messages from Liam. She ignored them, sliding into the driver's seat of her compact sedan and tossing her suitcase into the passenger footwell.

Sitting behind the steering wheel, Maya finally let out a shaky breath, her hands trembling as she pulled up a hidden folder on her phone. The spreadsheet her family had discovered was only the surface layer of a much deeper, darker financial crime. For the past six months, Maya had been secretly forensic-auditing her late uncle’s real estate empire, uncovering a web of embezzlement that went far deeper than she had initially feared. But the money missing from the family trust hadn't vanished into thin air. It had been systematically funneled into an offshore account controlled by a person none of them suspected.

Her phone stopped vibrating, replaced by a single incoming text message from an unknown number. It contained a single photograph: a grainy picture of her mother, Helen, meeting with a disgraced financial advisor at a downtown diner just three days prior.

Maya stared at the screen, her blood running cold. Her mother wasn't just a victim in this tragedy; she was the architect of the entire scheme, and she had framed Maya to take the fall.

Before Maya could process the implication of the photograph, her passenger side window tapped sharply. She jumped, turning her head to see Liam standing outside, his face dark with fury as he wrenched the door handle open before she could lock it.
