Chapter 14 - Unraveling the Foundation

The rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a heavy, damp fog that blanketed the tarmac as the police cruisers escorted the arrested suspects toward downtown headquarters. Maya and Liam stood in silence near their parked cars, the flashing red lights fading into the distance.
Liam stared blankly at his phone screen, where Maya had forwarded the digitized incorporation papers bearing their father's signature.
"He lied to us every single day," Liam whispered, his voice hollow and broken. "All those lectures about hard work, honesty, and family integrity... it was all a mask for a thief."
"People who build their lives on lies usually expect everyone else to keep holding up the walls," Maya said quietly, slipping her phone into her coat pocket.
She walked over to her rolling suitcase, which still sat in the backseat of her car—the very suitcase she had dragged out of the house that morning when her world had first exploded. Looking back at it now, leaving that house wasn't an exile; it was her liberation.
"What are you going to do now?" Liam asked, his voice trembling as he looked at his sister with newfound respect and sorrow.
"I'm going to finish the audit, hand over the remaining assets to the federal receivers, and walk away," Maya replied firmly. "I'm done carrying their burdens, Liam. You should do the same."
Liam nodded slowly, wiping a tear from his cheek before turning back toward his own vehicle.
Maya slid into the driver's seat of her sedan, starting the engine with a steady, confident hand. She put the car in drive and pulled away from the airfield, leaving the wreckage of her family's deceit behind her in the rearview mirror.
She drove back toward the city under the emerging night sky, feeling lighter than she had in years. The investigation was officially closed, the guilty were facing justice, and her name had been completely cleared.

As she crossed the bridge leading into downtown Chicago, her phone chimed with a final text message from an unknown number—a message that contained a file path she never expected to see.
