Chapter 12 - Cornered on the Tarmac

"Maya, you really don't know when to quit, do you?" Helen shouted over the deafening roar of the jet turbine, her voice carrying a venomous chill.
Marcus dropped his briefcase, reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out a small, metallic flash drive that he tossed carelessly onto the wet tarmac. "She doesn't have a warrant, Helen. Let's just get on the plane. The authorities are still twenty minutes away."
"No, they aren't," a familiar voice echoed from behind Maya.
Maya spun around in surprise. Liam burst through the perimeter gate, panting heavily, clutching a printed stack of bank statements in one hand and his phone in the other. Behind him, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the access road as three police cruisers tore onto the tarmac, cutting off the jet's exit path.
Helen’s face drained of every last trace of color. She looked from Liam, holding the incriminating documents, to the police officers swarming out of their cruisers with badges raised.
"It's over, Mom," Liam said, his voice cracking with profound heartbreak as he stepped forward. "I called the federal marshal myself. The accounts are frozen."
Marcus cursed under his breath, taking a sudden step backward toward the aircraft stairs, but two armed airport security officers intercepted him, shoving him harshly against the side of the plane and slapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Helen stood frozen on the tarmac, her carefully constructed empire of lies crumbling around her in a matter of seconds. She looked directly at Maya, her eyes holding no remorse, only a bitter, cold defiance.
"You ruined everything," Helen whispered bitterly as the police closed in on her, their heavy boots splashing through the puddles.
Maya stood tall, holding her smartphone securely in her hand. The digital screen displayed the undeniable proof of her innocence, glowing brightly against the fading twilight.

Before the cuffs could click shut around her mother's wrists, Helen uttered a final, parting sentence that stopped Maya dead in her tracks.
