Chapter 5 - Cornered in the Foyer

The silver candlestick gleamed ominously under the dim hallway lighting as Clara stepped closer, her footsteps clicking with deliberate slowness against the marble floor. Maya gripped the cream-colored envelope tighter, the heavy paper crinkling audibly in her white-knuckled fist.

"Give it here, Maya," Clara said, her voice dripping with a false sweetness that made Maya’s skin crawl. "You’re just a confused, grief-stricken child. You don't know what you're holding."

"You killed her," Maya whispered, her voice trembling not with fear, but with a pure, cold rage. "You and my father. You murdered her for this house, for the money."

Clara laughed, a short, barking sound. "Prove it. Who is going to believe a hysterical twenty-year-old girl over a grieving husband and a respected business partner? Hand over the envelope, or I’ll scream right now and tell security that you attacked me with a weapon."

Maya backed up until her lower back hit the heavy wooden front door. There was no escape this way. She looked around frantically, searching for a way out.

Suddenly, a heavy shadow fell over the foyer. Julian stepped out from the darkness of the study, buttoning his suit jacket. He looked at Maya, then at the envelope in her hand, his face completely devoid of paternal warmth.

"Maya, listen to reason," Julian said, his voice dangerously calm. "Hand the letter to Clara. We can provide for you. You can have an allowance, an apartment in the city. You don't need to carry the weight of things you don't understand."

Maya stared at her father, realizing in that exact moment that the man standing before her was a stranger.

"I’d rather die in the gutter like my mother than take a single cent of your blood money," Maya spat, her eyes locking onto the door handle behind her.

With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Maya twisted the lock and yanked the heavy door open, tumbling out into the freezing night rain just as Clara lunged forward to grab her hair.
