Chapter 12 - Ashes on the Balcony

The biting wind whipped the smoke from the burning paper into the night air as Julian stood on the second-floor balcony, letting the charred remnants of the estate deed flutter down like black snow onto the stone patio below. Clara stood right beside him, her phone pressed tightly to her ear as she barked urgent instructions to their corporate legal team.

Down in the courtyard, Maya stared up at the balcony, her breath catching in her throat.

"He's destroying the primary deeds," Maya said, her voice laced with panic as she gripped David’s arm. "If those papers are gone, how do we prove ownership?"

David didn't flinch. He watched the burning ashes drift down with an unsettling calm.

"Paper can be burned, Maya, but digital ledgers backed up on federal servers cannot," David said softly, tapping his breast pocket where the master flash drive rested securely. "Let him burn all the paper he wants. He’s just destroying his own alibi."

The state trooper who had stopped them stepped forward, gesturing toward an unmarked cruiser idling nearby. "Mr. Miller, Ms. Vance, let’s get you both into the vehicle. We have warrants signed by a federal judge waiting to be served."

As Maya turned toward the cruiser, the front doors of the mansion burst open. Julian marched out onto the front steps, flanked by three high-priced corporate attorneys who had apparently arrived through the back gates.

"Officer!" Julian called out, his voice smooth, authoritative, and dripping with fabricated concern. "You’re making a grave mistake. These intruders ambushed my wife and me, trespassing on private property and harassing my grieving stepdaughter."

The state trooper paused, looking back and forth between Julian and David.

Julian stepped down the steps, pointing a steady finger directly at Maya. "She’s unstable, Officer. Look at her—she’s holding a stolen luxury handbag containing sensitive corporate documents she has no legal right to possess. Arrest them both for burglary."

Maya stepped forward, her rage boiling over, but David gently placed a hand on her shoulder, stepping into the harsh light of the patrol car’s headlights.

"Mr. Vance," David said, his voice ringing loud and clear across the courtyard. "You might want to check who owns the holding company that currently holds your corporate debt before you accuse us of burglary."

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his color draining instantly as David pulled a folded federal document from his coat and held it up for all to see.
