Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

The heavy oak front door clicked shut, cutting off the chill of the evening air, but the atmosphere inside the foyer remained absolute ice. Julian stepped between Clara and his daughter, his expression unreadable as he adjusted his cuffs. Maya wiped her wet face with the sleeve of her grey sweater, her breathing still ragged. The luxury handbag sat heavily on the marble console table where Clara had dropped it, its zipper slightly ajar, revealing the corner of a cream-colored envelope peeking out from the suede interior.
"Go to your room, Maya," Julian instructed quietly, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"Not until she explains why her lawyers were at Mom's office before the coroner even arrived," Maya shot back, her voice shaking with righteous fury.
Clara laughed softly, a sound devoid of any warmth or humor.
"The girl is grieving, Julian. Grief makes people paranoid, desperate, and prone to wild accusations."
Julian didn't look at Clara. His gaze remained fixed on his daughter.
"Go upstairs, Maya. We will talk in the morning."
Maya swallowed hard, her eyes darting to the luxury handbag. Without a word, she turned and marched past them, her boots clicking loudly against the hardwood stairs. Once she reached the landing, she ducked into the shadows of the hallway alcove, refusing to go to her bedroom. Through the iron railing, she watched her father and Clara below. She saw Clara lean in close, whispering something fiercely into Julian’s ear. Julian’s posture stiffened instantly, his hand clenching into a fist at his side.
"You promised me control of the estate before the probate hearing," Clara hissed, thinking they were alone.
Julian turned his head slowly, his jaw tight.
"I control the estate, Clara. You are merely a beneficiary of my discretion."
Clara’s smile vanished, replaced by a look of sheer calculation. She reached out and tapped the luxury handbag with a single red nail.

"Are you sure about that, darling? Because your late wife left very specific instructions inside this little bag, and it doesn't mention you at all."
